UNIT 3 The Blind Dog
R.K. Narayan’s story ‘The Blind Dog’ is about a loyal street dog and a blind
beggar. It shows how humans treat animals.
Tiger was a street dog. He was white and dirty, with a tail that had been mutilated
early in life. He grew up eating scraps from the marketplace and spent his nights
there.
Three years later, Tiger's life changed. A blind beggar arrived at the market, and
Tiger approached him. The blind man gave Tiger food, and they became friends.
A village boy used to steal the blind man's coins every Thursday when he came to
sell vegetables. One Thursday, while the boy was stealing, Tiger chased him away.
An old woman who helped the beggar died, leaving him alone. A ribbon-seller
gave the beggar a long ribbon to tie around Tiger's neck so he could lead him
around.
Tiger lost his freedom. He became a slave to his master. The blind man got greedy
and wanted to make more money, so Tiger had to work harder. The dog became
very thin.
One day, a perfumer borrowed scissors from the ribbon vendor and cut Tiger's
leash. Tiger was free and roamed the market happily. The blind man was left
alone.
After more than twenty days, Tiger returned to his master. The blind man thought
Tiger came back because he was hungry and tied him up again, this time with a
steel chain. They were seen together in the market as usual.
The ribbon seller remarked, "Only death can free that dog!"
