The Blind Dog, published in 1947, is one of the most famous, memorable and
touching short story of R.K. Narayan. This is the story of a dog and his loyalty to a
blind beggar. This story tells us about human greed and his cruelty to animals.
This is the story of a blind beggar and his dog. The dog was an ordinary/simple dog.
One day, a beggar appeared at the market gate and an old woman gave him food and
shelter daily. The dog was also sitting nearby him. The blind man sensed that the
dog was sitting near him. He stroked/touched gently the dog and gave something to
eat.
From that day , the dog became the companion/friend of the beggar. One evening,
the old woman did not come at her usual time. Someone told him that she had died.
It was a great shock to the blind beggar. A ribbon vendor saw the plight of the beggar
and he tied a cord/string round the dog’s neck and gave it to the beggar. Sudden a
change came in the life of dog. The dog lost its freedom and did not bark and its
world became limited to the blind dog. The dog accepted all this.
The blind beggar roamed about the street of the city with dog. He did not take rest
as his income increased. He became more and more greedy. Along with the beggar,
the dog had to work all the day. He was not allowed to take rest. The dog became a
slave of the beggar. Whenever the dog stopped, his master kicked the dog with his
stick. The dog became very weak and its ribs could be seen. One day the ribbon
vendor and the perfume seller saw all that and felt pity on the dog’s condition. They
cut the rope/string of the dog and the dog became free.
It was very surprised that the dog returned to the blind beggar the last night. At first,
he gave the dog a blow. But he forgave the dog .He said that the hunger of the dog
brought back and the dog would not live without him. The dog became a slave of
the beggar again.
Thus, the blind man was a greedy, ill-tempered and selfish man. The most important
message of the story is the loyalty of a dog to its master and ill-treatment of a man
towards animals. In brief, it is a touching and unforgettable meaningful story about
the friendship of a dog and the blind beggar. The title of the story is very meaningful,
apt and suitable to the theme of the story. The style of the story is graceful, marked
by genial humour, elegance and simplicity.
Above all, it is one of the most touching and finest meaningful story of R.K.Narayan
about a blind beggar and the dog.
