CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the background of the study, the statement of the

problem, the significance of the study, and its scope and delimitation.

Background of the Study

Education is the process of receiving or giving systematic instruction to an

individual. It enables every individual to make a difference in human existence to

the best of their capacity in order to benefit both themselves and to the society they

belong to. Every student ought to strive to achieve their best academic results

because they will have a significant impact on their future.

Mohammed Al Matalka and Mohammad Al Dwakat states that Academic

Performance is defined as a student's ability to complete academic assignments,

and it is assessed using objective criteria such as final course grades and grading

point average (Journal of Positive School Psychology, 2022).

Students are expected to spend much of their time on their education and

need to graduate with good academic results. Academically good students have

better employment benefits, higher income, higher self-esteem and self-

confidence, low levels of anxiety and depression, and are less likely to engage in

substance abuse. According to Tadese, Yeshaneh & Mulu (2022), gaining

knowledge, attitudes, values, and skills through education is not a simple task;

rather, it is a long and challenging trip in life.

This means that through education, we might experience joy and suffering

at the same time (Colleen Thompson, 2019).

In order to raise awareness to their situation and assist their fellow students

in coping with personal issues, restore their enthusiasm and willingness to finish

school, and improve their academic performance once more, the researchers

chose to conduct research on the factors affecting the academic performance of

Grade 10 students at General Licerio Geronimo Memorial National High School.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the Factors Affecting the Academic

Performance of Grade 10 students.

Specially, this study sought to answer the following problems:

1. What are the common factors that affect the academic performance of

grade 10 students?

2. What are the possible reasons why students experienced these factors?

3. What are the positive impacts of these factors on students?

4. What are the negative impacts of these factors on students?

Significance of the Study

The result of the study will be of great benefit to the following:

Students. Student will be more able to make adjustments and deal better

because of the research; they will be more aware of the factors influencing their

academic achievement.

Teacher. Teachers will be aware of the factors stated and consider

various instructional methods that could help students improve academically

despite these factors.

Parents and Guardians. Parents and Guardians will be aware about the

factors affecting the academic performance of their children and this will give them

the opportunity to understand and help their children.

Future Researchers. To have the background and knowledge to be their

reference and guide in future research.

Scope and Delimitation

This study focused on knowing the Factors that Affects the Academic

Performance of the Grade 10 Students in General Licerio Geronimo Memorial

National High School during this school year (2022-2023).
