Teacher Joshua B. Sallan Learning Area Mathematics
Time 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm Quarter

I. OBJECTIVES

A. Content Standards The learner demonstrates understanding key

concepts of quadratic equations inequalities and
functions and rational algebraic equations.
B. Performance Standards The learner is able to investigate thoroughly
mathematical relationships in various situations,
formulate real-life problems involving quadratic
equations inequalities and functions, and rational
agebraic equations and solve them using variety
of strategies.
C. Learning Competencies The learner describes the relationship between
the coefficients and the roots of a quadratic
equation.
D. Learning Objectives. At the end of the discussion, at least 75% of the
students will be able to:
a. recall the four methods in solving
quadratic equations;
b. appreciate the sum and product of
roots of quadratic equation; and
c. determine the sum and product of
the roots of quadratic equation using
the value of coefficient a, b, and c.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. Topic or Content The sum and the products of roots of quadratic

equation
B. Materials Powerpoint, Projector, marker

C. References https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBSj35rik8w

III. PROCEDURES
Teacher’s Activity Student's Activity
A. PRELIMINARY ACTIVITIES

“Goodevening, class!”

“Please stand up for a prayer”

“Praise be the name of our lord Jesus

Christ”

(the teacher will check the attendance)

“What did we discuss last meeting

class?”
“What are the four methods in solving
quadratic equation?”

B. Presenting the new

lesson/motivation

“Before we start let’s divide the class

into 2groups.

“Your task is to find the roots of

quadratic equation using any method.
After finding the roots, find the sum and
the product of the roots.”

“Each group will be given different

quadratic eqaution.”

Group 1: 2 x 2+8 x−10=0

Group 2: x 2−10 x+ 21=0

“Each group will have one representative

to write their answer on the board and
another one for the explaination of the
answer. This activity is good for seven
minutes only. Your time starts now!”

“Okay class, time’s up! Settle down; go

back to your proper seats.”

“Let’s answer the equation of group 1.”

“Is the answer of group 1 correct?”

“Yes it is! Now let’s proceed to group 2”

“Is the answer of group 2: correct?”

C. Establishing a purpose for the

lesson

“Based on the activity, what do you think

is our topic for today?”
(call a student name)

“Very good!”

D. Presenting examples/instances of
the new lesson

“Today we’re going to talk about the sum

and product of the roots of quadratic
equation.”

“Usually to find the sum and product of

roots of quadratic equation we solve it
using any of four methods to solve
quadratic equation like factoring,
completing the square, extracting the
square roots and using quadratic
formula. But do know my dear student
there's an easy way or method to find
the sum and the product of roots of
quadratic equation and that is our topic
for today.”

E. Discussing new concepts and

practicing new skills

“The formula in finding the sum of a

quadratic equation is”

−b
s=
a

“The formula in finding the product of a

quadratic equation is “
c
p=
a

For example, we have

2
x −7 x +12=0
2
x −7 x +12=0
a=1 , b=7 ,c=12
−b c
s= p=
a a
−7 12
¿ =
1 1
s=−7 p=12

“Now I will give you an equation and find

the sum and product of roots of
quadratic equation using these formula.”

“Answer the following for five minutes.

Find the sum and the product of roots of
quadratic equation”

1. 6 x 2+ 12 x−18=0

“Time’s up! Who wants to answer?”

2
(call a student) 6 x + 12 x−18=0
a=6 , b=12 ,c =−18
−b c
s= p=
a a
−12 −18
¿ =
6 6
s=−2 p=−3
“Very good!”

F. Making generalizations and

abstractions about the lesson

“Did you get it class?”

“In determining the sum and the product

of roots of the quadratic equation, what
is the formula?”

“Are there any clarifications?”

IV. EVALUATION
Find the sum and the product of the roots of the following quadratic equation.

1.4 x 2+8 x +3=0

2. 9 x 2−6 x=8
3. 8 x 2=6 x +9
”This activity is good for fifteen minutes. Your time starts now.”

V. ASSIGNMENTS
Find the sum and the product of the roots of the following quadratic equation.

1.)10 x 2−19 x+6=0

2.) 2 x 2−6 x=0
3.)3 x 2−10 x−8=0
