DISTRACTED

A VIDEO SHORTS LESSON PLAN BY NIK PEACHEY

This lesson uses a short video clip, some quotes and an infographic to
explore the impact that mobile phones and digital distractions can have on
DISTRACTED personal relationships. By the end of the lesson students will have some
tips for being a better listener and paying attention to others as well as
some tips for responsible mobile phone use.
Aims:
• To improve ability to listen to others and pay attention.
• To develop a better understanding of the impact of mobile phone use on
relationships and to develop an understanding of responsible phone use.

Task 1
In this stage of the lesson students read some quotes about mobile phones
and decide which ones they agree with.

Slide 1
Procedure
• Show students Slide 1.
• Ask them to read the quotes and decide which one best matches to their
own opinion.
• Once they have decided, put them into small groups and get them to share
which one they chose and why.
• Monitor while they work and try to identify any language gaps you can help
them with.
• Get the students to share their views as a class and then input any new
language you think will be useful for them.

Task 2
In this stage of the lesson, students think about how they use their mobile
phone and the impact it has on their relationships with the people around
them.

Slide 2
Procedure
• Show the students Slide 2.
• Give the students time to read the questions and then put them into pairs or
small groups to discuss them.
• Monitor while they work and try to identify any language gaps you can help
them with. Listen out for useful expressions and vocabulary you can share
with the group.
• Get the students to discuss the questions as a class and share their views.
• Give some feedback on their performance and share any useful words or
expressions that came out of the discussion.
• Click on the interactive button and the end of the discussion and share the
link to the self-assessment questionnaire on phone addiction. Get the
students to rate themselves then click on the next button to show them how
they compare to other people who have completed the lesson.

Task 3
In this stage of the lesson students watch the video and find out what
happens.

Slide 3
Procedure
• Show the students Slide 3.
• Tell them to watch the video and rate the man’s parenting skills from 1 - 10.
• Play the video and then put the students into pairs to compare their scores.
• Get some feedback from around the class.

Task 4
In this stage of the lesson students discuss the video and the impact of the
man’s behaviour on his daughter.

Slide 4
• Next show the students Slide 4.
• Ask them to work in pairs and discuss the questions to try to get a better
understanding of the background to the story.
• You can also play the video again if you think it will help stimulate the
discussion more.
• Once they have answered the questions in pairs , regroup the pairs so that
students work with a new partner and get them to comp[are their answers.
• Monitor while they work and try to identify any language gaps you can help
them with.
• Get some feedback from around the class and feed in any new vocabulary.

Task 5
In this stage the students role-play a conversation between the girl and her
counsellor. They also practice empathetic listening.

Slide 5
Procedure
• Now show the students Slide 5.
• Show them the tips for being a good listener and ask the students to sit so
that they are prepared to listen to the person next to them.
• Put the students into pairs and ask them to scan the role cards (or share the
links with them)
• Give the students time to read the role cards.
• Ask the counsellor to start the conversation.
• Monitor while they work together and be sure to observe their physical
behaviour as well as listening to their use of language.
• Once the role-play is finished give some feedback on their body language
as well as their use of language.
• Ask the students that played the daughter if they felt they were being
listened to. You could also reverse the roles and repeat the role-play.
• Ask the students what they think the daughter should say to her father.

Task 6
In this stage of the lesson students create tips for responsible mobile phone
use and compare their tips to ones in an infographic.

Slide 6
Procedure
• Tell the students you like them to think of some tips for responsible mobile
phone use. Show them the 4 categories on Slide 6.
• Put the students into groups to brainstorm ideas for their tips. Tell them to
focus on quantity rather than quality of tips and try to think of as many as
they can in 3 - 5 minutes.
• Once they have brainstormed the tips ask them to think about them in more
detail and evaluate the tips. They should choose the 3 best ones for each
category and write them down.
• Reorder the students and get them to compare their tips with students from
a different group. Ask them which tips they would like to steal from a
different group.
• Get the students to scan the QR code and look at the infographic (or you
could share a link to it.)
• Get the students to compare their own tips to those in the infographic.
• Ask the students which tips in the infographic they think would be most
useful.

Task 7
In this stage of the lesson, students reflect on what they have learned from
the lesson.

Slide 7
Procedure
• Show the students the questions on Slide 7.
• Ask the students to think about the questions.
• You can also give them a link to the digital form so that they can make
notes.
• Once they have made some notes, get the students to compare their notes
and discuss the questions together.
• Get some feedback from the students.
• Ask them if they were using any of the listening tips during the discussion.
• Thanks them for their hard work and end the class.
