In today’s fast-paced modern world, where everything can be done with just a simple click, online
shopping has easily become all the rage, with multiple e-commerce websites doing all they can to
meet the demand and keep the tides flowing via multiple sales every few months. And it’s very easy
to see why. For one thing, it saves everyone the trouble of going to a physical store since everything
can be bought with your phone, with the added benefit of that product getting delivered to your

doorstep. According to psychotherapists, however, too much online shopping should be recognized
as an actual mental health disorder.
It’s not a new problem in the first place. Throughout time, the idea of shopping to make ourselves
feel good has always been considered as a problem, and is usually referred to as ‘buying-shopping
disorder,’ or BSD. However, experts state that when placed in the context of the internet age and
today’s technological climate, it takes on a whole new, worse meaning, and is now so rampant that
it affects one in 20 people.
Those who suffer from BSD can easily start showing negative behaviors, such as spending too
much money on things they don’t need, buying things just for the sake of buying, end up in debt
and in worst cases, even lose self-control. "It really is time to recognize BSD as separate mental
health condition and to accumulate further knowledge about BSD on the Internet," Dr. Astrid
Müller, a psychotherapist at Hannover Medical School in Germany, said. In one of their studies, she
and her colleagues looked at data from 122 patients seeking help for their online shopping addiction
and found that they have a higher risk of developing both anxiety and depression. And while BSD
is not classified a disorder, it affects five percent of the population, and so should be given more
serious attention.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions.
In early March, New York resident Sadie Millard was visiting her boyfriend in Bermuda as the city
began to shut down due to COVID-19. And now, she is applying for a new one-year residential
certificate via the Work From Bermuda programme, which would allow her to legally live and work
remotely for up to 12 months there. “My thought was, if I’m going to be here or there, I’d rather be
in Bermuda where I feel much safer given the strong rules and regulations the government has set
up for testing and managing the pandemic,” she explains.
Government officials in Bermuda, which reopened its borders on 1 July, noticed that tourists were
asking how to extend their 90-day entry visas. Meanwhile, the tourism community saw visitors
doing things that they have never done in the past such as joining gyms and booking villas for
months on end during their stay. “That was the lightbulb moment for us,” says Glenn Jones, CEO of
the Bermuda Tourism Authority. Bermuda is just one example of these emerging remote-work
programmes. Another tourism-dependent country, Georgia, announced a similar project in July.
While most of these schemes arose as speedy remedies to buffer the hard-hit tourism sector with
long-term travellers who pose fewer Covid-19 risks than in-and-out visitors, others have been
planned for quite some time. For instance, the Digital Nomad Visa from Estonia is a project two
years in the making and its 1 August launch date just happened to coincide with the pandemic. “We 6
LUYỆN THI MINH HẰNG TOPIC: JOBS
HỌC THỬ MIỄN PHÍ
launched this visa because we saw an opportunity that no country was addressing,” explains Ott
Vatter, managing director at e-Residency for the Republic of Estonia. “There was a substantial
amount of people who were working illegally on holiday visas, so we thought, why not have the
government solve this?”
With few studies conducted in advance, the economic effects that these programmes may have on
the nations and territories promoting them remain unclear. What is clear, however, is that the
number of people able to apply for these kinds of visas may be growing. Marilyn Devonish, a
flexible-work strategist based in London, says there’s been “a seismic shift in the way the world
works, with remote and flexible working very likely to become the norm after the pandemic is over
once organisations learn how to effectively manage and motivate remote employees”.
Some are still sceptical about these hastily formed remote worker visa programmes, saying that they
are only being used as a marketing tool with a view to increasing visitor count. That being said, the
emergence of these programmes may mean that an entirely new segment of the workforce that
never before considered working from abroad will now realise its potential allure.
