Thdi is a Tourism Development Official for the National Department of Tourism and
lives in Johannesburg. She is going to London to represent South Africa at the
World Travel Market and is very excited because she has always wanted to visit
London to experience “The World’s Capital”.

2.1 Thandi’s flight will leave Johannesburg at 20:00 on SA543


on 23 July; the direct flight will take 11 hours to get to
London. Advise Thandi what time and date the flight will
arrive taking into consideration that Daylight Saving Time
applies. Show all your calculations.

2.2 Explain the concept of Daylight Saving Time to Thandi. (1)

2.3 Thandi is looking forward to meeting her colleague,


Sibusiso, from New York, at the conference. If Sibusiso
arrives in London at 22:00 on 24 July after an 8 hour
flight, calculate what time and date he left New York.
(Ignore DST) (3)

2.4. While at the conference Thandi has to phone Mr. Smith in


Singapore (+8) during office hours (09:00 to 17:00). She
wants to make the call during her tea break at 11:00 in the
morning of 26 July. Calculate what time it will be in
Singapore and advise Thandi whether she will reach Mr.
Smith at his office. (DST applies to London only) (3)

2.5 There is a possibility that Thandi will have to fly from


London to Sydney. Calculate the flying time if flight SA
423 takes off from London at 16:00 on 28 July and arrives
in Sydney at 14:00 on 29 July. (Ignore DST) (3)

2.6 On a flight to Sydney would Thandi experience Jet Lag or


Jet Fatigue? Motivate your answer. (2)

Thandi will be able to stay in London and enjoy some


sightseeing. Read the case study below and help her
budget and plan for her extra days. Copy the tables on
page 12 onto your answer sheet and fill in the missing
