SMJP2203: Assignment #3

Chapter 5
Computational Fluid Dynamics
Deadline: 04 July 2024

Introduction
This assignment aims to provide students with practical experience in applying Computational Fluid Dy-
namics (CFD) tools to analyze fluid flow in engineering systems. Students will learn how to set up, run,
and interpret CFD simulations, gaining insights into the behavior of fluids under various conditions. The
assignment will enhance their understanding of fluid mechanics principles and their application in real-
world scenarios.

Objectives
1. To familiarize students with the basics of CFD software and its application in solving fluid mechanics
problems.

2. To develop the ability to set up and run CFD simulations for various fluid flow problems.
3. To interpret and analyze the results of CFD simulations.
4. To understand the impact of different boundary conditions and fluid properties on flow behavior.
5. To present technical findings effectively.

1 Assignment Description
Students will be required to choose a specific fluid flow problem relevant to mechanical engineering. They
will then use CFD software (OpenFOAM) to perform the following tasks:

1. Problem Definition and Literature Review

• Select a fluid flow problem.
• Conduct a brief literature review to understand the problem and previous studies related to it.
2. Geometry and Mesh Generation
• Create or import the geometry of the system to be analyzed.
• Generate a computational mesh, ensuring appropriate refinement in critical areas.

3. Setting Up the Simulation

• Define the fluid properties (density, viscosity, etc.).
• Set boundary conditions (inlet, outlet, walls, symmetry planes, etc.).
• Choose an appropriate turbulence model, if necessary.

4. Running the Simulation

• Configure solver settings and run the CFD simulation.

1
• Monitor convergence and ensure that the solution is stable.
5. Post-Processing and Analysis

• Visualize the flow field (velocity, pressure, temperature distributions).

• Analyze key parameters such as drag, lift, pressure drop, or heat transfer rates.
• Compare results with theoretical predictions or experimental data, if available.
6. Reporting and Presentation

• Compile a detailed report documenting the problem definition, simulation setup, results, and
analysis.
(a) Introduction and literature review
(b) Geometry and mesh generation
(c) Simulation setup and boundary conditions
(d) Results and discussion
(e) Conclusion and recommendations
(f) References (min. 10, latest 2020)
• Discuss the implications of the findings and any limitations of the study.

2 Evaluation Criteria
(a) Understanding of CFD Principles (10 marks): Demonstrated grasp of CFD concepts and proper appli-
cation of simulation techniques.
(b) Quality of Simulation Setup (5 marks):: Appropriateness of geometry, mesh, boundary conditions,
and solver settings.
(c) Accuracy and Analysis of Results (3 marks):: Correct interpretation of simulation results and compar-
ison with theoretical/experimental data.

(d) Technical Report Quality (2 marks):: Clarity, organization, and thoroughness of the written report.

3 List of Problems
Choose one of the following problems.

1. hotRoom: Focuses on natural convection in a single room, simple geometry.

2. comfortHotRoom: Evaluates thermal comfort, similar to hotRoom but with a focus on comfort crite-
ria.
3. circuitBoardCooling: Focus from buoyancy-driven flow in indoor environments to the specific chal-
lenges of thermal management in electronics.
4. circuitBoardCooling: Includes natural convection, radiation, and complex geometry of a circuit
board.
5. heatExchanger: Simulates a basic heat exchanger, introduces complexity with the design and flow
paths.
