SIGNIFICANCE OF BIOPELLET IN INDIA

• India burns 670 million tons of coal

annually for power generation.
• To reduce greenhouse gas emissions,
the Government of India mandates a
5% blend of biomass pellets from
agro-residues in coal plants with bowl
mills, benefiting its 1.5 billion
population by improving air quality.
Biomass Pellets for Power Generation in India?

1.Techno-Economic Feasibility:
Surplus biomass feedstock is projected to grow from 242 Mt
(2010–11) to 281 Mt (2030–31), enabling an estimated BPBP
capacity of 35 GW by 2030–31.
2.Electricity Generation Potential:
Biomass pellets can generate 244 TWh annually by 2030–31,
contributing 6% to India’s electricity needs.
3.Co-Firing Mandate:

What is Calorific Value?
The calorific value defines the
energetic content of the materials; it is
the amount of heat a substance
produces after complete combustion.
You can express it as the gross calorific
value (GCV) or high heating value.
Also, the calorific value of a substance
(generally, solid biofuel or food) is the
specific energy of combustion for a
unit mass. The SI unit of the calorific
value is KJ/Kg.
Highlight the calorific value with a "Fuel Fight" animation comparing

Government support in Biopellet production in India
The “Biomass Programme” by the “Ministry of New and Renewable Energy”
in India aims to support the establishment of “Biomass Briquette/Pellet
manufacturing plants” and promote “Biomass (non-bagasse) based
cogeneration projects” in industries across the country.
1. Financial Assistance:
- Briquette/Pellet Manufacturing Plants: Up to Rs.9 lakh per metric ton/hour
(MTPH) manufacturing capacity (maximum Rs. 45 lakhs per plant).
- Biomass (Non-bagasse) Cogeneration Projects: Up to Rs. 40 lakhs per
megawatt (MW) installed capacity (maximum Rs.5 crores per project).
2. Eligibility:
- Self-funded projects are also eligible for financial assistance.
- Projects with new equipment/machinery qualify for assistance.
Government support in Biopellet production in India
3. Application Process:
- Proposals for Central Financial Assistance (CFA) are accepted through the
“BioURJA Portal” before commissioning.
- Commissioning timeframes: 12 months for Briquette/Pellet plants and 24
months for Biomass cogeneration plants from the "In-Principle" approval
date.

Division via email: [email protected] Additionally, the Indian government
recognizes biomass cofiring in thermal power plants as renewable energy for
meeting non-solar Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO).
Trial of Biopellet Prepared by Napier Grass
Pelletization from nonwoody biomass has gained a lot of
attention due to its potential to secure biomass feedstock supply
and pricing. Studies have been conducted to produce biopellets
from different parts of Napier grass plant. In this study, two
different species of Napier grass were used, one was Wild
Napier grass (WNG) and another was Pakchong Napier grass
(PNG) or Super Napier. Two pressure points and five different
times were varied accordingly. Proximate, ultimate, and Fourier
transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR)analyses were performed
to assess chemical properties.

Trial of Biopellet Prepared by Napier Grass
Statistical analysis of the collected data validated and supported the
discussion. The produced pellets of Napier grass exhibited good energy
density comparable to those in the literature based on gross calorific
values. The pellet density demonstrated a significant effect with time,
pressure, and feedstock ratios. The pellet durability test showed
comparable characteristics to another biomass pellet. Both Pakchong
Napier grass (PNG) and wild Napier grass (WNG) biopellet densities
obtained were higher than 0.650 g/cm3, and the durability was higher
than 95%. This signifies that the pellet can withstand repeated transfer
during handling without breakage

Drying: Wet elephant grass, even after crushing process, can’t be sent into biomass
briquette machine since it should be dried through the dryer to meet moisture
requirements for briquetting. If the elephant grass is dry and the moisture content
reach the standard, this process can be ignored. The Napier grass can be dry in the sun,
in order to save energy cost for drying.
Crushing: Because Napier grass is relatively long and can’t be directly processed into
briquettes, it needs to be crushed into small pieces for further processing. And, this
process also can help to protect biomass briquetting press machine. Then Napier grass
passes through high effective hammer mill and rotary drying system.
Pelleting: After the above process Napier grass is fed into pelleting machine which is
specially designed (customized) to ensure this kind of light material can be fed into the
pellet machine easily for required sizes and shapes.
Cooling and bagging:

The price of biopellets in India can vary based on factors like the type of biomass
used, production costs, and market demand. For bio pellets with a gross calorific
value of around 4245 Kcal/Kg, the price typically ranges from Rs. 9000 to
Rs.10,000 per ton. But, assume that industries gives the price less to the owner
of the bio pellet manufacture company about Rs.9,000/- per ton of bio pellet.
Gross income from 1 acre of Napier grass in fertile soil with well management=
Rs.35 tons Biopellets of Napier grass @Rs.9,000/ton so Rs. 3,15,000/- obtained.
The Napier grass remained in the same field for 5 years so obtained gross
income during 5 years approximately Rs. 12.96 Lakh (considering the reduction
of Napier grass yield after commencing of the year).
The cost of cultivation of Napier Grass and cost of bio pellet project is not taken
into account.
