Focus Artist
Antoni Gaudí was born in Reus, Spain in 1852 and died in
Barcelona in 1926 after being hit by a tram. He started
studying at the Provincial School of Architecture in
Barcelona in 1869 and finished in 1878 because of military
service. He did so much work that he never married and
people even thought he was a beggar because of his poor
clothes and lack of ID.
He also made other famous buildings like the Park Güell, Casa Milà, Casa Batlló, and
the Eixample District. The Eixample is an enormous district in Barcelona where the
buildings are constructed in square patterns.
Gaudi used all of the materials he was provided. For example, with tiles, he even
used the broken ones this allowed him to develop amazing patterns with great
variety and range of colours. His work was very creative and used lots of strong lines,
different shapes, significant arches, unusual texture and patterns.

What were the main elements?
A key part of Antoni’s style is that the buildings he
designed is that it is that they are all have scale, lines,
arches, texture, interesting shapes, and patterns.
Celler Güell-1890
Celler Güell demonstrates Gaudí’s style by the use of arches, lots of irregular shapes
and texture. He has used the stone to give the Güell a medieval look and feel this
has been accomplished by leaving the stone in its natural “form”. The use of the
irregular shapes and arches gives the building some height and makes it seem taller
than it is. The structures that are sticking up also provides the building height as well.
The use of the exposed stone gives the building texture that couldn’t be
accomplished if the stone wasn’t exposed and contrasts with the unique design.
