What design techniques did Antoni Gaudí use

in his architecture?
Focus Artist
Antoni Gaudí was born in Reus, Spain in 1852 and died in
Barcelona in 1926 after being hit by a tram. He started
studying at the Provincial School of Architecture in
Barcelona in 1869 and finished in 1878 because of military
service. He did so much work that he never married and
people even thought he was a beggar because of his poor
clothes and lack of ID.

Most of his work is in Barcelona and he is most famous for

the La Sagrada Familia which is a Roman Catholic Church,
work started in 1882 and it is expected to be finished by
2026. It is taking so long because during the Spanish Civil
War some of Gaudí’s models were destroyed and they
were so detailed it took over 16 years to remake them.

He also made other famous buildings like the Park Güell, Casa Milà, Casa Batlló, and
the Eixample District. The Eixample is an enormous district in Barcelona where the
buildings are constructed in square patterns.

What was Gaudí’s design style?

Gaudí’s inspirations included neo-gothic and Art-
Nouveau. However, he also used traditional
Catalonian Styles, they include; Oriental, Gothic
Architecture and Mauresque or Moorish
Architecture, this was interesting because he
didn’t travel around Europe but his local area
provided him many design ideas. The materials he
used were different to the normal characteristics
of his style e.g. stone to ceramic and tiles, wrought
iron to glass and bricks were all placed into his
The famous Sagrada Familia designs.

Gaudi used all of the materials he was provided. For example, with tiles, he even
used the broken ones this allowed him to develop amazing patterns with great
variety and range of colours. His work was very creative and used lots of strong lines,
different shapes, significant arches, unusual texture and patterns.

What were the main elements?
A key part of Antoni’s style is that the buildings he
designed is that it is that they are all have scale, lines,
arches, texture, interesting shapes, and patterns.

On each of his buildings he used a unique texture

and patterns on the outside and in them. An example
is the difference between the El Capricho and the
Celler Güell. The difference is with the Güell the
outside is classic stone but on the Capricho it has
bricks and patterned tiles. With the El Capricho it is a
traditional design but uses non-traditional materials,
while the Celler Güell has traditional materials but a
non-traditional design.

On all of his buildings he uses arches and other

shapes this makes the buildings seem taller than they
are. The use of the arches also gives the building a
good scale and the use of irregular shapes also helps El Capricho 1883-85
with this as certain parts stand out above other
buildings. Another thing he does is use strong lines to make the edges and other
features stand out.

Analysis of his work

Celler Güell-1890

Celler Güell demonstrates Gaudí’s style by the use of arches, lots of irregular shapes
and texture. He has used the stone to give the Güell a medieval look and feel this
has been accomplished by leaving the stone in its natural “form”. The use of the
irregular shapes and arches gives the building some height and makes it seem taller
than it is. The structures that are sticking up also provides the building height as well.
The use of the exposed stone gives the building texture that couldn’t be
accomplished if the stone wasn’t exposed and contrasts with the unique design.
