CHILDHOOD &
EARLY LIFE
• On 26 June 1852, Antoni was baptized in the church of Sant Pere Apòstol in Reus. As a child, he suffered from rheumatic problems,
because of which he often found walking a painful experience and was forced to travel either on donkeys or stay at home, missing his
classes.
• Rheumatics also prevented him from playing with other children. Left alone, he spent his time watching plants, animals and stones,
especially during their visit to Riudoms. Slowly, he began to discover a natural pattern, which he would store in his memory. He would
later call nature his real teacher
• In 1868, sixteen years old Gaudi moved to Barcelona to study architecture at Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura. But before he
could enter the institution, he had to take three elective courses at the Provincial School of Architecture, and two courses in the
College of Science.
• In 1873, he entered Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura. But his studies were interrupted, when, on 7 July 1874, he was enlisted
in the army as part of his compulsory military service. According to available records, he was assigned to the Army Infantry in
Barcelona as assistant in Military Administration.
• On completing his military service in December 1876, he returned to Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura to continue his studies,
attending philosophy, history, economics, and aesthetics classes along with studying architecture. That was because he believed that
different architectural styles depended on the social and political atmosphere of that period.
• Although he was not an outstanding student, he did get excellent grades in two projects, one of which involved designing of buildings
or parts of it. The other one required him to design the patio of the Barcelona Provincial Council. He financed his education by
working on various projects.
INTRODUCTION
TO HIS WORK
•  Antoni gaudí I cornet was A spanish catalan architect.
• The best-known representative of catalan modernism.
•  His works are marked by a highly individual style.
• The vast majority of them are situated in the catalan capital of barcelona.
•  Much of gaudí's work was marked by the four passions of his life: architecture,
nature, religion and his love for catalonia.
•  He himself was skilled, such as ceramics, stained glass, wrought ironwork forging
and carpentry.
•  Introduced new techniques in the treatment of the materials.
• trencadis, made of waste ceramic pieces.
THE ARTIST
•  He created A type of structure known as EQUILIBRATED I.E., It could stand on its own without
internal bracing, external buttressing, etc.
• The primary functional elements of this system were columns that tilted to employ diagonal
thrusts and lightweight tile vaults.
• Notably, gaudi used his equilibrated system to construct two barcelona apartment buildings: the
casa ballot (1904–06) and the casa milà (1905–10), whose floors were structured like clusters of
tile lily pads. Both projects are considered to be characteristic of gaudi's style.
ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGIES
• Gaudí’s work employing organic or natural forms, curved or undulating
lines, reclaimed materials, ceramic bricks, trencadís mosaics, etc.
• He projects in such a way that the form does not become a mere
stylistic caprice, but rather finds its reason for being in the function for
which it was conceived. For examples: the schools at the Sagrada
Família and hyperbolic vaults.
• He used steel inside of the building to reinforce his structure.
•  Rarely did gaudí draw detailed plans of his works.
THE STYLE
•  A purely non-objective approach in the making of artwork, without reference to
the real world
• Essentially geometric, precise and almost mathematical; in fact a number of
Rodchenko drawings were executed with compass and ruler.
• Used squares, rectangles, circles and triangles as the predominant shapes in
carefully composed artworks, whether drawing, painting, design or sculpture.
• Emphasized the dominance of the world of machines and structures over nature
DESIGN PRINCIPLES
• Reaction against the styles that were developed by machine-
production.
• Objects were simple in form, without decoration.
• Emphasize the qualities of the materials used ("truth to material").
• Used patterns inspired by British flora and fauna.
• Influenced by the Gothic Revival (1830–1880) & interested in
medieval styles, using bold forms and strong colors based on
medieval designs.
• believe in the moral purpose of art.
• To express the beauty of craft, some products were deliberately
left slightly unfinished, resulting in a certain rustic and robust
effect.
METHODS AND MATERIALS
• Dealt with such a wide range of materials that anything was possible; wood, celluloid, nylon,
Plexiglas, tin, cardboard and early forms of plastic were used through a variety of constructing
methods from glue through to welding.
• Lacked the more engineered approach developed by International Constructivism.
• Employed new materials, construction, and joining methods, including aluminum, electronic
components and chrome-plating.
• Industrial materials such as glass, steel, and plastic in clearly defined arrangements. Because of
their admiration for machines and technology, functionalism, and modern mediums
