Experiment 4
Calibration of Wattmeter
Introduction:
The calibration of a three-phase wattmeter for single-phase operation is the main objective of
Experiment 4. Wattmeters are essential tools in electrical engineering because they offer accurate
power consumption measurements. The objective of this experiment is to ensure the accuracy of
the wattmeter by determining the necessary multiplying factor for reliable power readings. We
use resistive loads in conjunction with an AC voltmeter and ammeter to accomplish this goal.
Through careful measurement of both load voltage and wattmeter readings at different values of
load current, we can determine the multiplier needed to obtain precise power readings. This
exercise emphasizes the importance of calibration in electrical measurements and provides a real-
world example of how crucial it is to attain precision.
Objective: To calibrate the given three phase wattmeter for a single phase operation

Procedure:
1. Connect as shown.
2. For each value of the load current, measure the load voltage, and the wattmeter reading.
3. Tabulate your observations as given in the table below.

Conclusions:
The three-phase wattmeter was calibrated for single-phase operation, which allowed us to
measure the power in Experiment 4 with accuracy. We measured the load voltage and
wattmeter readings at different load current values in a methodical manner in order to determine
the critical wattmeter multiplying factor. The importance of calibration in ensuring the precision
and reliability of power measurements in scientific and electrical engineering applications was
demonstrated by this procedure. By enhancing data quality and enabling more informed
decision-making in practical situations, this experiment demonstrates the practical significance
of wattmeter calibration for electrical engineering.
