GREAT READS

Book
of the
month

wonderful playtimes with this new read

In this magical book, you’ll discover a

collection of 50 beginner-friendly knitting
patterns for Foxy, a stylish urban fox, and his
friends: Lolly the Cat; Sasha the Dog; Banjo
the Bear; Rodney the Raccoon and Echo the
Arctic Fox. Follow Foxy and his friends as they
set off on adventures near and far and learn to
knit them, their clothes and accessories. Foxy
and his friends have a very quirky, original style
which stands out because they are based on
illustrations by the designer’s sister.

Creative beginnings
The co-authors Daniella Taylor and Venice
Shone are sisters. Foxy was created by Venice
as an illustration and has appeared in various
printed products. Daniella, a knitwear designer,
decided to recreate Venice’s drawings in knit
form and knitted Foxy and Friends were born.

Knitting know-how
Packed full of patterns this collection offers
so many options. Knit Foxy and Banjo as
they drink coffee and talk about their passion,
music. Knit Lolly’s cute beret and coat that she
wears as she visits the market. There are written
patterns and simple charts (when required) for
all the projects and step-by-step instructions
and artworks for all the necessary techniques
and stitches. As well as the wonderful
photography of the friends on their adventures,
there are wonderful illustrations that really
bring their characters to life and will have you
reaching for this book every time.

ELMER™ HOT WATER BOTTLE COVER

Note The outer cover is made using blocks of colours and the
intarsia method, working each colour block with a separate ball of
yarn and crossing yarns at colour changes. Making up will be
quicker if the Yarn A-J ends are fastened as the cover is being
knitted. As there is an inner lining, there is no need to sew these
ends as they will be enclosed, but it is important to ensure that they
are knotted firmly. The lining uses smaller needles to make it
slightly smaller than the outer cover.

Wind off smaller balls of Yarns A-J before you begin, or locate both
ends of the ball. Use a separate end of yarn for each colour block.
When casting on in different colours, work 1 extra stitch in each
colour except the final colour. As you add each new colour, pass the
extra stitch over the first cast-on stitch of the next colour to prevent
gaps. These extra sts are not included in the instructions.

Notes French Knots for eyes and noses, etc, can be made in two
ways: Embroidered by using a length of yarn threaded onto a
tapestry needle. Bring the needle up through knitted fabric and
making a sewn stitch a short distance away. Before the sewn stitch
is completed, wrap the yarn around the needle point 4 times.
Complete the stitch by pulling yarn through wraps. Alternatively,
take a short length of yarn and make a knot at the centre. Wrap the
yarn 4 times around the loop of the knot before pulling it tight. Sew
in the long ends of yarn, placing a knot in required position.

This resulted in some very lumpy toys but
I loved them just the same! I found in later

Absolutely nothing. Stocking stitch usually
curls, because knit and purl stitches
have different tensions. When you work
stocking stitch back and forth, you work
one row of knit stitches and one row of
purl stitches, and the asymmetry of the
stitches causes the curling, which I agree
is very annoying. This is one reason why
we use garter stitch or ribbing for edges
– it doesn’t curl up – although a curl can
be a design feature. The best thing to do
is to create a border around your swatch. The best swatch could be a

MAKING UP
BAG
Stitch row ends together, then join cast-on edges together so the
row-end seam is at the centre back.

BEARD
Position the Beard on the side of the Bag, ensuring that it sits below
the face (Yarn C section).

MOUSTACHE
Secure Moustache pieces to the face, above the Beard.

NOSE
Secure nose to the centre of the Moustache.

EYES
Using two strands of Yarn D and chain stitch make two vertical
stitches to form the eyes.

DRAWSTRING
Next take three strands of Yarn B measuring 45cm each, and
braid them together. Starting at the side of the Sack thread the
braid through the drawstring holes all the way around, then tie the
two ends together. Make another identical braid, and thread it
through the holes, beginning at the opposite site to the first braid,
and tying the two ends together as before. This will enable a tight
closure of the Sack.

FELTED TREES

FELTING
Place all three trees with a hand towel in the washing machine
drum. Add a standard amount of non-bio, bleach-free laundry
detergent. Use a 40°C cotton wash cycle with normal spin length.
Once the wash cycle is finished remove the trees and stretch them
into cone shapes whilst they are still wet. Stuff the trees firmly with
toy stuffing to help mould the shapes, then leave to dry at room
temperature.

EMBROIDERY
Use 3 strands of embroidery floss. Temporarily remove the stuffing
from the dried felted trees. Using the photographs to guide you,
embroider 1cm crosses on the largest tree. Use running stitch to
decorate the medium size tree. Embroider French knots in a
random pattern on the small tree.

Wood stands Cut 3 x 2cm sections from a 3.5cm diameter branch

(or length of squared timber). Carefully drill a 2mm hole in the
middle of each wood section for the wire.

FINISHING
1 Cut three lengths of 2mm wire (20cm for the Large Tree, 17cm
Medium Tree, 13cm Small Tree).
2 For each tree push the wire into the felt cone and pack toy stuffing
around the wire to hold it in place.
3 Use a pencil to push the stuffing firmly into the tree tip around the
wire. Leave the lower 2.5cm of each tree unstuffed.
4 Push the free end of the wire into the drilled hole on the wood
base. Stand up on your sideboard.

needle; rep from * to end. [29 sts]
Cast off loosely.

With WS held tog, sew Yarn C part of both Main Cosy pieces
together, keeping the tube part as a tube.

At top edge of Main Cosy, sew a row of running stitches along both
top edges, in the garter stitch section only and draw up to close the
top. This will leave a hole about 1.5cm in size. Fasten off. Around the
hole at drawn-up top of cosy, sew through the ends of the tubes at
the top and draw those up too to cover the hole.
Place Main Cosy onto your teapot and sew down from centre top of
cosy, until you reach the two tubes (one on front piece and one on
back). Sew the tubes together. Do this on both sides, leaving
opening for the teapot handle and spout.
