What are the environmental function of

Tropical Rainforests?
How can we save the rainforest?
Success Criteria
At the end of today’s lesson, I will be able to:
1. Describe what the environmental functions of tropical
rainforests.
2. Explain how tropical rainforests contribute to carbon
storage
3. Explain how tropical rainforests help prevent soil erosion.
4. Explain how forests are used by people.
Environmental Functions of Tropical Rainforests
1. Generate Oxygen
2. Contribute to carbon storage
3. Provide habitats for diverse animal life
4. Provide protection from soil erosion
1. Generation of Oxygen
• Oxygen generation through
photosynthesis.
• CO2 is absorbed, water and
sunlight to produce food
• Capable of producing oxygen
throughout the year as they
are evergreen
2. Carbon Storage
• Absorb Carbon dioxide from the
atmosphere during
photosynthesis
• Stored in the solid form in the
plants - in their leaves, branches,
stems and roots
• Dead leaves and branches that fall
to the ground add carbon to the
soil.
• Roots of the plants also produce
soil carbon
3. Provides Habitat for animals
• Amazon TR alone:
• More than 1000
species of freshwater
birds
• Over 300 types of
mammals, reptiles,
and amphibians
• Over 2 million species
of insects
4. Prevent Soil Erosion
4. Prevent Soil Erosion

5. Overall soil
erosion by
flowing water is
minimised.
Tropical Rainforests used by People
1. Place for habitation
2. Place for recreation
3. Source of food
4. Source of raw materials
Tropical Rainforests
used by People
1. Place for habitation
- Original inhabitants
- Indigenous people
- Depend on the physical
environment for basic needs.
- E.g. food, water, shelter &
clothing
- Korowai tribe, New Guinea in
Indonesia

3. Source of Raw Materials
- Wood for furniture and
buildings
- E.g. Teak, mahogany &
rosewood
- Valued for strength and
durability
- Tiles for flooring, musical
instruments, etc.
- Minerals, metals
- E.g. Diamonds and iron.
