Committee: Office Of The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights

Agenda: Addressing the current global status and acceptability of ethnic minorities
with special emphasis on the Rohingya crisis
Portfolio: Federal Republic of Germany
Name: Adhishree Nagar

Ethnic minorities across the world face significant and serious challenges in their day to day life,
which can range from discrimination, which is the tip of the iceberg, to lynching and mob
violence. These severe issues are often exacerbated by poverty, lack of access to healthcare and
education, as well as unemployment. The Rohingya Crisis, where in August of 2017, thousands
of Rohingya people, close to, if not a million, were displaced, thrown out of a country, a harbour
of violence against them. A country that had been their home for generations. Myanmar. A
predominantly Buddhist country where large scale genocide was committed against these people,
for simply being different. For practising a different religion. For being Muslim.

The reputed Federal Republic of Germany, a country that had, in the past, been an epicentre for
violence and genocide against those who were religiously different. Due to Adolf Hitler’s rise to
power in the 1930s, the world saw the atrocities committed against those who followed Judaism.
This caused a mass genocide, and led Europe and the rest of the World into an economic crisis.
As a developed nation with the third largest economy in the world,as of december 2023, the
German Government would like to extend our full support to the Rohingya people, and help
avoid an economic crisis in the Union of Myanmar and the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, as
well as the rest of South and South-East Asia. As a responsible nation, and a member of the UN,
Germany is committed to the principles of human rights and equality, and is also committed to
the well-being of the Rohingya People. The government does not approve of any sort of
humanitarian violence and therefore, I would like to propose the “ASSIST” planL

1. A- Advocate for Human Rights: Advocating for the rights of the Rohingya people should
be done at both, national levels, by the people, and internationally by other countries to
prevent violations and severe ill treatment of the people.
2. S- Support for the Victims: Providing both financial short term relief aid, long term
developmental aid as well as housing, mental health health services and legal assistance
for victims of human trafficking, sexual assault, as well as disfiguration.
3. S- Strengthening ties between Countries: Strengthening the ties between countries can
have a constructive outcome on the transport of the Rohingyas to countries that may have
the ability to support them.
4. I- International Bill on Human Rights: the international Bill on Human Rights lays down
important human right laws for the States to follow under all circumstances, and these
laws have been violated in Myanmar. Germany urges these laws to be strictly enforced.
5. S- Strict Penalties to be imposed on Violators of Human Rights: Strict penalties, like
those placed down by the Nuremberg Tribunal in 1946, must be re-implemented to instill
fear in those who violate human rights on both, small and large scales.
T- Timely and Detailed Verdict by the ICJ: Timely action by the International Court of
Justice, the ICJ, can help provide a safe, and secure future for the suffering Rohingya
people. The verdict, which should be as detailed as possible, will have an impact on the
people.
