The Ordinary Magic of Charles Bukowski

● Introduction

Henry Charles Bukowski was a prolific German- American poet, short

story writer and a profound novelist. He wrote about the ordinary
lives of poor Americans, the process of writing and relationships. The
harsh treatment of his father and the impact of the Great Depression,
increased his rage and this gave him a new voice for his writings.

● Text

BBC 2 Bookmark’s Documentary titled, “The Ordinary Madness/Magic

of Charles Bukowski” was published on 18th of March 1995. The
3

documentary features Bukowski’s life and work chronicled by his

friends. We could see strong imagery, simple and direct language and
a realistic approach of Bukowski towards life and literature.

The initial part shows his aversion to people but at the same time
expressing his preferences for isolation and for pets and plants. There
is an image of a chaotic party where the poet acts absurdly and a
piano player who performs mechanically without any passion. And
also about his traumatic childhood and how it influenced his journey
towards creative writing.

The second part talks about how writing becomes a way out of all
materialistic things which he writes through a poem titled, “Writing”.
Later he talks about his work history at the post office where he
struggled a lot.

Bukowski never tries to get engaged in celebrity activities because he

never wanted to become a clown like figure. He converted his life
experiences as humorous which became the foundation for his
stories.

The Face of Judas Iscariot

7

“The Face of Judas Iscariot” is a story by Bonnie Chamberlain

about humanity, narrated to the author by an old priest. The story is
about a painter who finds a model for the face of Judas Iscariot after
seeing a beggar in a tavern. The beggar agrees to model for the
painter, but the painter is surprised to discover that the beggar was
also the model for the child Jesus many years earlier.

Judas Iscariot was one of the Twelve Apostles who betrayed Jesus to
the Sanhedrin in exchange for 30 pieces of silver. He identified Jesus
to the crowd by kissing him on the cheek and calling him "master".
According to the Bible, Judas either committed suicide by hanging or
died suddenly in a field he bought with the money he received for
betraying Jesus.
