CHAPTER 1

Background of the Study

The goal of advancing scientific knowledge and useful applications in

agriculture served as the foundation for the formulation of the research

question. To clarify the mechanisms behind yeast-mediated enhancement of

tomato growth, the researcher developed a precise and targeted research

question. This was done by considering the urgent need for sustainable

agricultural solutions in a rapidly changing environment as well as the

knowledge gained from earlier studies. This exploration and learning process

prepared the stage for a thorough study of the possibilities of using yeast as a

biofertilizer in environmentally friendly tomatoes. The complex interactions

between plants and microbes lead to research into the effects of yeast on

tomato growth. The study by (Wu et al., 2021), investigated the intricate area of

plant-microbe interactions which fascinated the researcher with the possibility of

using beneficial microorganisms to improve agricultural methods sustainably.

The possibility of using yeast, a microbe that is frequently overlooked, to

enhance plant development and resilience grabbed the researcher's interest in

observing the growing need for environmentally benign substitutes for

traditional agricultural practices. Farmers used strong chemical fertilizers that

might not have been noticeable for a while, but if they were piled up, they would

have been dangerous to plant and might have contributed to soil pollution that

could have adversely affected production. In addition to that, the percentage of

seed germination decreased. The growth of the plants was not proportional to
their original growth rate. The soil then needed to be neutralized to attain the

high growth rate of the plant. (Delerue and Scattolin,2022)

I.1 Statement of the Problem:

The experiment aimed to determine the effectiveness of yeast as an alternative fertilizer

on the growth of the tomato plant. The researchers conducted the experiment to assess the

growth rate of the tomato plant and how the yeast concentration affects the development of the

tomato plant. They were specifically seeking answers to the following questions:

1. How does the application of yeast impact the height and leaf count of the tomato plant?

2. Are there any adverse effects or limitations associated with using yeast as a fertilizer for

tomato plants?

3. What are the economic implications of using yeast as a fertilizer compared to traditional

fertilizers, considering both cost and effectiveness?

I.2 Objectives:

1. To measure the specific amount of yeast that results in the best plant growth outcomes.

2. To determine the impact of different yeast concentrations on plant growth

3. To analyze the ecological impact and sustainability of using yeast in plant growth

I.3 Significance of the study:

"Have you ever wondered if yeast, typically used in baking and brewing, could have an

impact on Tomato growth?"

This question has intrigued scientists and gardeners alike, as they seek to understand the

potential benefits of yeast in promoting plant growth. This knowledge can lead to improved
cultivation practices. Yeast application may influence the microbial community in the soil, which

in turn can impact the nutrient availability and overall soil health. Researching the effects of

yeast as a fertilizer can shed light on its role in maintaining soil fertility. By assessing the impact

of varied yeast amounts on tomato plant growth, researchers can determine if there are

correlations with yield quantity and quality. Therefore, studying the effect of yeast on plant

growth could provide valuable insights into the potential use of this microorganism in

agriculture, this information is valuable for farmers looking to maximize their crop production.

The use of yeast as a plant growth promoter has gained attention due to its ability to enhance

plant growth and development. This research paper aims to explore the impact of yeast on plant

growth, will delve into how yeast affects plant growth at different stages of development,

potential cost savings for farmers and the mechanisms by which yeast enhances plant growth. To

comprehend the effect of yeast on plant growth this can have significant implication on

agriculture and cultivation practices, particularly in terms of enhancing crop productivity and

sustainability.

I.4 Scope and Limitations:

This research focuses on finding out the impact of using different amounts of yeast mixed

with water on the growth and development of tomato plants. The study uses fifteen replicates of

tomato plants selected based on the same height and number of leaves. There is no other

variation of the tomato plant contained in the experiment. The production of tomatoes and

their nutritious levels are not included in the study.

I.5 Definition of Terms

Microbial community- made up of yeast promotes healthy growth plant, resistance to

disease, the cycling of nutrients through fermentation processes and genetic exchange in soil, the

roots, and plant tissues.

Yield Quantity and Quality- Yield quantity refers the volume or amount of the crop

gathered, whereas yield quality relate to the overall qualities and value of the harvest food.

Crop productivity- measures usable measure produce yield

Yeast concentration- Describe the quantity of yeast, usually expressed in cell per

millimeter, that is present in a specific volume of solution.
