Headword Synonyms
Procedure
A Work with students to start this exercise off. Ask them to find IGNORE in the Language Activator
and explain to students how to find words within the entry – i.e. the 3 different meanings. Students can
then work alone or in pairs.
To open the Activator, click on Activator on the main screen of the DVD-ROM. Enter ignore in the
Search box or scroll down the keywords in the left-hand column. The entry for IGNORE is divided into
3 sections, which will be displayed in the centre column of the screen. The synonyms in section 1 will
be automatically displayed in the right-hand column. Clicking on section 2 in the centre column will
display the synonyms in section 2 in the right-hand column.
B Students work together using the new words from Part A. Monitor as the students work, and ask
students to feed back to the class at the end.
C Ask students to look up LAUGH in the Language Activator to find the synonyms. Ask students to
feed back their answers.

D Students can work alone or in pairs to do their own searches. You may want to put some
suggestions on the board: go, eat, drink, run to give students ideas. Monitor as students work to see if
they have any questions.
Ask students to make up a conversation or a role play around the theme of the words they look up.
For example, if students look up different ways of saying sorry, they could then make up an imaginary
conversation about why they feel bad about what happened. If they look up run, they could make up a
conversation about some sort of sport that they are watching or are involved in. Similarly, eat or drink
could be a conversation centred around a restaurant, café or dinner table.
