GAUGE:

11 1/2 hdc + 8 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm) with A and larger hook.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern
and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for
in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from
person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a
smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

hdc2tog (hdc 2 sts together) (Yarn over, insert hook in next st and draw up a loop) twice,
yarn over and draw through all 5 loops on hook – 1 st decreased.
V-st (V-stitch) Work (dc, ch 1, dc) in indicated st.
shell Work 6 dc in indicated st.

1. Sweater is made in 2 pieces: Back and Underpiece. Pieces are worked separately. Sides are
seamed with sections left unsewn for leg openings.
2. Flowers and Leaves are worked separately and sewed to Sweater.

Row 1 (RS): Hdc in 3rd ch from hook (beg ch counts as

Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as hdc in this and in all following
rows), turn, hdc in each st across.
Rep Row 2 until piece measures 7 1/2 (12 1/2, 13, 14) in.

Shape Top
Decrease Row: Ch 2, turn, hdc2tog, hdc in each st to last 3
sts, hdc2tog, hdc in last st – 34 (44, 50, 60) sts at the end

rows), turn, hdc in each st across.
Rep Row 2 until piece measures 4 1/2 (8 1/2, 9 1/2, 9 1/2)
in. (11.5 (21.5, 24, 24) cm) from beg.
Shape Top
Decrease Row: Ch 2, turn, hdc2tog, hdc in each st to last 3
sts, hdc2tog, hdc in last st – 14 (14, 20, 24) sts at the end
of this row.
Rep Decrease Row 2 (2, 1, 2) more times – 10 (10, 18, 20)
sts when all decreases have been completed.
Next Row: Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st across.

LARGE FLOWERS (make 6 – 1 each with C, E, F, and G; 2 with D)


With smaller hook, ch 25.
Row 1: Dc in 5th ch from hook (counts as first V-st), *ch 1, sk next ch, V-st in next ch; rep from * across
– 11 V-sts.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn, 5 dc in ch-1 sp of first V-st (counts as first shell), *sc in next ch-1 sp
(between V-sts), shell in ch-1 sp of next V-st; rep from * across, working last shell in turning ch-sp – 11
shells. Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing.
Thread yarn tail into blunt needle. Roll first shell tightly to form center bud of Flower; sew together with 2
or 3 sts. Roll remaining strip to form Flower, secure by sewing in and out through layers of foundation ch
at lower edge of Flower.
SMALL FLOWERS (make 6 – 1 each with C, D, F and G; 2 with E)
With smaller hook, ch 17.
Rows 1 and 2: Rep Rows 1 and 2 of Large Flower – 4 shells.
Roll and sew piece in same way as Large Flower.
LEAVES (make 13)
With smaller hook and H, ch 10.
Rnd 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in next 4 ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, 3 sc in last
ch; working across opposite side of foundation ch, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next 4 ch, hdc in
next ch, sc in last ch; join with sl st in first sc.
Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing.

FINISHING
Following diagram, sew sides of Underpiece to Back, leaving 2 (2 1/2, 3, 3 1/2) in. (5 (6.5, 7.5, 9) cm)
open on each side for legs, then sew remainder of Underpiece to Back. Note that the lower portion of the
Back remains unsewn.
Neck Edging
From RS, with larger hook, join A with sc in any st along neck edge, work sc evenly spaced around neck;
join with sl st in first sc.
Fasten off.
Leg Edging
From RS, with larger hook, join A with sc anywhere on edge of leg opening, work sc evenly spaced around;
join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
Rep on opposite leg opening.
Lower Edging
From RS, with larger hook, join A with sc anywhere along lower edge of Sweater. Work sc evenly spaced
around, working 3 sc in each corner; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
Sew Flowers and Leaves to Back, arranging as desired.
Weave in ends.
