GAUGE:
16 sc = 4 in. (10 cm). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size
specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle
or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual
for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your
swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size

STITCH EXPLANATION:
sc2tog (sc dec) - Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next st and draw up
a loop. Yarn over, draw through all loops on hook.
PURSE
Ch 38.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st across.
Rep Row 2 until piece measures about 12 in. (30.5 cm) from beg.
Next Row: Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), sk next sc, work 1 dc in next sc, *sk 4 sc, (dc, ch 1, dc, ch
1, dc, ch 1, dc) in next st Shell made; rep from * across, end last rep sk 4 sc, 2 dc in last sc.
Next Row: Ch 3, turn. Sk next dc, dc in next dc, *work Shell in center ch-1 space of Shell;
rep from * across, end 2 dc in last dc.
Rep last row until piece measures about 17 in. (43 cm) from beg.
Fasten off.
BUTTON
Ch 2.
Rnd 1: Work 3 sc in first ch, join with sl st in first st to form a ring.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, work 2 sc in each st around; join with sl st in first st.
Rnd 3: Ch 1 *sc in next st, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around, join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 4: Ch 1 *sc in next st, sc2tog; rep from * around, join with sl st in first st.
Fasten off.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail into large-eyed blunt needle, sew around edge of
Button, pull tightly to gather, fasten off. Use remaining tail to sew Button to Purse.
FINISHING
Fold lower edge of Purse up about 6 in. (15 cm), and seam sides.
Sew on Button. Use space between shells as a buttonhole. Weave in ends.
OPTIONAL STRAP
Make a ch about 57 in. (145 cm) long.
Rows 1 and 2: Rep Rows 1 and 2 of Purse.
Row 3: Rep Row 2.
Fasten off.
Sew ends of Strap to inside of Purse.
SCARF
Row 1: Double crochet in 4th chain from hook and in each chain across.
Row 2: Chain 3, turn. Working in front loops only, double crochet in each stitch across,
end with a double crochet in top of the beginning chain.
