After 20 years, Boyz II Men havent reached the end of the road in their music career. In fact, the group is preparing to celebrate their milestone anniversary this fall with a new album, including reworked versions of their classic hits. Nothing too extreme or dramatic, but weve added a few things here and there, says Shawn Stockman of their upcoming project. Boyz II Men brought their Motown-Philly harmonies to the masses when they made their debut with Cooleyhighharmony in 1991; propelled by hits like End of the Road and Its So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday, the Philadelphia-based groups rst album sold more than 9 million copies. Their sophomore CD, II, sold 12 million copies. Stockman says the group which originally included Wanya Morris, Nathan Morris and Michael McCary had no idea how huge their achievements were. We were so busy just working ... we didnt think too much about how it would impact the world, which is probably a good thing, because it kept us sharp and kept us focused, even to this present day, he said. Looking back, its a great thing. Its hard to talk about it because its something that we think its a great milestone in our careers, but were still hungry, and we still feel like we have so much more to contribute,

musically and otherwise. The group which became a trio after McCary left still records and performs regularly. Their last CD, 2009s Love, had them performing standard love songs. They have never replicated the sales, or the radio success, of those rst two multimillion-selling albums. Still, Stockman says they havent stopped being successful.
It wasnt the kind of thing where we made op albums, and someone got on drugs, and then all kind of craziness happened. The industry just changed, and tastes changed, he said. We didnt fall off. ... Time and how things have gone in the industry and in life, it kind of preserved us to be able to have some sort of success. The trios upcoming album,
Twenty, will feature new songs and new renditions of some of their best-known work. Weve always been true to our love songs, and the type of music that we do, we feel this type of music is timeless, he said. Its our 20th anniversary, so we wanted to not only give our listeners something new, but our new listeners I guess an anthology.
BOOK REVIEW
Those with a soft spot for adventuresome romantics will nd it difcult not to be beguiled by young Everett Ruess after reading David Roberts noteworthy book. A thorough biographer and determined detective, Roberts also explores the reasons that people remain intrigued by the ill-fated artist who disappeared nearly eight decades ago a mystery that Roberts convincingly unravels in the nal section of Finding Everett Ruess. Ruess was just 20 when he vanished in 1934 while on one of his wanderings in the red rock country of Utah. He had undertaken a handful of such journeys since he was 16, accompanied only by pack animals. He sent a steady stream of letters to his parents and brother in Los Angeles as well as to friends. He wrote of his love of nature, his
desire for solitude and his struggle to develop deep friendships while feeling apart from others. God, how the trail lures me, he wrote to his brother, Waldo, in 1932. Ill never stop wandering. And when the time comes to die, Ill nd the wildest, loneliest, most desolate spot there is. Over the years the mystery gained Ruess a cult following and imbued his writings and artwork with a certain aura. Its similar to the taken-too-young quality that keeps actor James Dean a gure of fascination and turns another wanderer, Chris McCandless of Into the Wild notoriety, into a subject of interest. Finding Everett Ruess: The Life and Unsolved Disappearance of a Legendary Wilderness Explorer contends that the young vagabond may have been a John Muir in the making. Indeed, Ruess writings matured with time and experience, and he showed potential to join

earlier. Innocents who embark on physical and intellectual journeys often captivate us with their moments of self-discovery. Roberts provides a realistic view of this adventurer but still allows us to hear the voice of Everett Ruess in all its tones of youth, passion and wonder.
