CEN 411: CONSTRUCTION PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT

TUTORIAL 3
1. For the network shown, in Fig. 1, determine the critical path and the probability of finishing
the project within the schedules time (a) Ts = 31.67, (b) Ts = 35.0. Within how many time
units would you expect the project to be complete with probability of 65% and 35%.

Fig. 1
2. A construction company engaged in undertaking small projects has recently been awarded
a project. The project activities and the estimated time for their completion are listed in
Table 1, alongwith information on predecessor(s) and successor(s).
(a) Construct a network for the project. For numbering the events (nodes), follow
Fulkerson’s rule
(b) Determine the earliest event times, latest event times, slacks, critical path and
project completion time.
(c) What is the probability of completing the project in the completion time you
have arrived at?
(d) Determine the time interval within which the probability of completion of
project will be 90%.

3. A new product is to be released on a deadline for which 25 days are left. The remaining
activities in product launch with their interdependencies, the expected average times and
the standard deviations are given in Table 2. Draw a project network using AOA
convention and find the probability of completing the project in time.

F C 3 0.5
G D 5 1.0
H B, E, D 5 2.0
