Mathematics 10
Fourth Quarter – Week 1

Lesson: Measures of Position

MELC: Illustrates the following measures of position: quartiles, deciles and
percentiles. (M10SPIVa-1, Week 1)

Key Concepts

Measures of position are used to describe the position of specific data

value with the rest of the data. These are techniques that divide a set of data into
equal groups. The most common measures of position are quartiles, deciles, and
percentiles called quantiles. Quantiles can be applied when:
1. dealing with large amount of data, which includes the timely results
for standardized tests in schools, etc.;
2. trying to discover the smallest as well as the largest values in a given
distribution;
3. examining financial fields for academic as well as statistical studies.

Important points:
Quartiles
Quartiles are the score points which divide a distribution into four equal
parts. Twenty-five percent (25%) of the distribution fall below the first quartile,
fifty percent (50%) fall below the second quartile, and seventy-five percent (75%)
fall below the third quartile. Q1 is called the lower quartile and Q3 is the upper
quartiles. Q1 < Q2 < Q3, where Q2 is nothing but the median.
The difference between Q3 and Q1 is the interquartile range.

Deciles
Deciles are the nine score points which divide a distribution into ten equal
parts. These deciles are denoted as D1, D2, D3,… D9.

Percentiles
Percentiles are the ninety-nine score points which divide a distribution into
one hundred equal parts so that each part represents the data set. They are used
to characterize values according to the percentage below them. For example, the
fifth percentile (P5) separates the lowest 5% from the top 95%, the twentieth
percentile (P20) separates the bottom 20% from the top 80%, and so on. By
definition: P25 = Q1; P50 = D5 = Q2 = median, and P75 = Q3.

Remember:
The data values must be arranged in ascending order.

Activity 1: Math-Jumbled
Directions: Arrange the letters to form the correct word or phrase related to
measures of position. The underlined letters are in their correct position
and served as your clue. Write your answer on the space provided.
1. QILTUARE __________________
These are values that divide a set of data into four equal parts and are
denoted by Q1, Q2, and Q3.
2. PENCERILETS __________________
These are values that divide a set of data into one hundred equal parts and
are denoted P1, P2, P3, …, P99 and 1% of the data falls under P1, 2% under P2
…, and 99% falls under P99.
3. DILECES __________________
These are values that divide a set of data into ten equal parts. These are
denoted by D1, D2, D3, …, D9.
4. PENCERILTE RANK __________________
It is the proportion of scores in a distribution that a specific score is greater
than or equal to.
5. RAGNE __________________
It is the difference between the highest and lowest data.
6. ITRENQILTUARE RAGNE __________________
It is the difference between Q3 and Q1.
7. MIADEN __________________
It divides the distribution into two equal parts.

Activity 2: Data Scrutiny

Directions: Fill in the blanks with the correct data from the table that illustrates
quartiles, deciles, and percentiles.

Department of Health – MIMAROPA reported 426 Covid-19 active cases last

April 5, 2021. The table below presents the specific data:

Province No. of Active Cases

1. Oriental Mindoro 300
2. Occidental Mindoro 73
3. Marinduque 15
4. Romblon 10
5. Palawan 28

1. a. In increasing order, the data above are arranged as follows:

___________________________________________________________

b. The least value in the data set is _________ and the greatest value is ________.

c. The middle value in the data set is _________.

d. The lower quartile is the value that is between the least value and the middle
value. So, the lower quartile is __________.

e. The upper quartile is the value that is between the greatest value and the
middle value. So, the upper quartile is ___________.

f. The Interquartile range is __________.

2. You are the third tallest student in a group of 10. If you are the third tallest
student, therefore 7 students are shorter than you.

It also means that 70% of the students are shorter than you. If you are the
4th tallest student in a group of 10, how many percent of the students are
shorter than you?

__________________________________________________________________

3. Which is most applicable to use if an investigator wants to determine in which

of the class limit fall one-tenth, three-tenth, etc., of the cases of distribution?
