Our topic for today is about

STORY.

What is a story?
A story or narrative is a
connected series of events told
through words (written or
spoken), imagery (still and
moving), body language,
performance, music, or any
other form of communication.

Stories are, have been, and

always will be an essential part
of human culture. Stories are
how we learn about each other,
our past, and our cultures.

There are types of story and for

today we will focus on Folktales
and Short Story.

Folktales are a kind of story that

gets passed on from generation
to generation. True folktales do
not have a single author. They
develop as different people tell
them over time. As such, they
are creations of “the folk,” or the
people.

Folktales tell about many

different parts of life. They may
tell about joys and sorrows,
animals and magic beings, and
heroes and villains. They can
be scary, funny, or exciting.
Different types of folktales may
entertain, teach a lesson, or try
to explain things that people do
not understand.

Here are examples of Folktale

story:

1. Cinderella
2. Little Red Riding Hood
3. The Little Mermaid

Short story is a brief fictional

prose narrative that is shorter
than a novel and that usually
deals with only a few
characters.
The short story is usually
concerned with a single effect
conveyed in only one or a few
significant episodes or scenes.
The form encourages economy
of setting, concise narrative,
and the omission of a complex
plot; character is disclosed in
action and dramatic encounters
but is seldom fully developed.
Compared to novels, short
stories often get overlooked as
an art form, but these singular
works of fiction deserve a closer
look. Short stories give readers
all the compelling characters,
drama, and descriptive
language of great fiction but in a
truly compact package.

5 key elements of a short story

1. Character
2. Setting
3. Conflict
4. Plot
5. Theme

 A character is a person,
or sometimes even an
animal, who takes part
in the action of a short
story or other literary
work.
 The setting of a short
story is the time and
place in which it
happens. Authors often
use descriptions of
landscape, scenery,
buildings, seasons or
weather to provide a
strong sense of setting.
 A plot is a series of
events and character
actions that relate to the
central conflict.
 The conflict is a
struggle between two
people or things in a
short story. The main
character is usually on
one side of the central
conflict. On the other
side, the main character
may struggle against
another important
character, against the
forces of nature, against
society, or even against
something inside himself
or herself (feelings,
emotions, illness).
 The theme is the central
idea or belief in a short
story.

These are the examples of

Short Story
1. The Tell-Tale Heart
2. Jack and the Beanstalk
3. Sleeping Beauty

Did you understand our lesson?

So who among you can

compare and contrast folktales
and short stories?

Yes, Bresamel?

Yes, ma’am.

(raising hands)

Ma’am folktales and short

stories share the goal of
entertaining, but their roots
and purposes differ.
Folktales are passed down
orally through generations,
reflecting cultural values
and beliefs.

Short stories, on the other

hand, are original creations
by individual authors. They
can be grounded in realism
or explore fantastical
concepts. Character
development and plot
twists are crucial, with

complex or simple. Unlike
