CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Introduction

These days, social media are inextricably intertwined with our lives and thus, with who we
are as a person and how we fare. Inquiries into personality and well-being are long-standing, and
many researchers have investigated how different forms of media have affected their personality
traits. For adolescents, who are in a critical stage of personal development, the impact of social
media is particularly significant. While platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter
offer opportunities for connection and entertainment, they also have the potential to shape
behavior and personality traits. The Big Five personality traits—Openness to Experience,
Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism—provide a well-established
framework for understanding individual differences in behavior and social interactions.
However, the extent to which these traits are influenced by social media usage, particularly
among adolescents.
Unfortunately, here in Katipunan National High School, many students or we say all of the
students have experience social media use, grade 7 to grade 12 have been try to connect to the
social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok and it can be influence
their personality traits like Openness to Experience, Conscientiousness, Extraversion,
Agreeableness, and Neuroticism.
Amichai-Hamburger and Vinitzky (2010) found that individuals with high extraversion are
more likely to engage in frequent and active social media use, enjoying the social connections it
offers. Conversely, those high in neuroticism may experience increased anxiety and emotional
distress due to negative comparisons or feedback on social platforms. This relationship suggests
that personality traits can mediate how adolescents perceive and respond to social media
interactions.
The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between social media usage and the
Big Five personality traits—Openness to Experience, Conscientiousness, Extraversion,
Agreeableness, and Neuroticism—among Grade 11 students at Katipunan National High School
for the school year 2024-2025. Specifically, the study aims to investigate how the social media
influence the big-five personality traits of the students.

Scope and Delimitation

This study examines how social media usage affects the Big Five personality traits
(Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism) among Grade 11
students at Katipunan National High School during the 2024-2025 school year. Data will be
collected through surveys and questionnaires from a representative sample of these students.
The study is limited to Grade 11 students at Katipunan National High School and does not
include students from other grades or schools. It will only examine the Big Five personality traits
and will not explore other personality models or traits. Additionally, the study will not account
for external factors such as family background, peer influence, or academic performance that
might also affect personality traits and social media usage

Hypothesis
H1. There is a significant relationship between social media and Big Five personality traits
(openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism)

Significance of the Study

For Students:
By understanding how social media influences different personality traits, students can
become more aware of their own behaviors and tendencies. This awareness can help them make
informed decisions about their social media use, potentially encouraging healthier habits that
foster positive social and emotional development.

For Parents:
This study will provide parents with a better understanding of how social media may
influence their children’s personalities, helping them to foster balanced social media habits at
home. By understanding the impact on personality traits, parents can support and guide their
children in making positive choices online.

RELATED REVIEW LITERATURE

This chapter presents the related review literature according to 23 Ashwini

Kothambikar (2023 ) The big five model holds the personality theory that states the personality
traits can be measured on 5 continuum traits. That is openness, Conscientiousness,
Agreeableness, Extraversion and neuroticism. Often people would be on either side of
continuum. Openness refers to being open to different aspects of life. The people high on
openness generally prefers challenges, are creative and thinks about abstract concepts. The
people who are at higher side on conscientiousness trait, follows a disciplined lifestyle. They
prefer to be punctual, tries to maintain a schedule and follow the rules.
As the literature reviewed above shows, each personality trait relates Differently to a
number of different online technologies. While there May be some similarities, such as
extraversion and openness to Experience both being positively related to social media use, such
Similar associations don’t necessarily hold when pairing the same Traits with different
technologies. Extraversion does not relate Positively to likelihood of general technology use
(Barnett et al., 2015), while openness to experience does (Witt et al., 2011)
As stated of Ulla Bunz, (2016), Results showed that extraversion predicted social
media engagement and intensity, and social media time. Conscientiousness predicted spending
less time on social media. In addition, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and
neuroticism predicted positive well-being stronger than did Social media use.
CHAPTER 3
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research design, research lical, research instrument, data
gathering procedure, and statistical treatment.

Research Design
This study will use a descriptive correlational research design to investigate the relationship
between social media usage and the big-five personality traits among grade 11 students at
Katipunan National High School for the school year 2024-2025. The design is chosen to observe
and analyze how different levels of social media engagement relate to personality characteristics.

Research locale
This research will take place at Katipunan National High School (KNHS), focusing on
Grade 11 students during the school year 2024-2025. KNHS, located in Katipunan Zamboanga
del Norte, serves a diverse population in a public setting that shapes students’ social experiences.
