1. What are Affixes?

Affixes are groups of letters added to the beginning or end of a word to change its meaning. They are divided
into two main types:
 Prefix: An affix added before the root word (beginning of the word).
 Suffix: An affix added after the root word (end of the word).

2. Types of Affixes
a) Prefixes
Prefixes modify the meaning of the root word. They can create the opposite meaning, make something
smaller or larger, or indicate a direction, time, or manner.
Prefix Meaning Example Word Example
un- not, opposite unhappy unhappy (not happy)
re- again, back redo redo (do again)
dis- opposite, reverse disconnect disconnect (not connect)
pre- before preheat preheat (heat before)

in- not, into inactive inactive (not active)
ex- out, away exit exit (go out)
b) Suffixes
Suffixes change the word's tense, form, or meaning. They often help determine the part of speech of the
word.
Suffix Meaning Example Word Example
-able capable of, able to readable readable (able to read)
-ful full of, having qualities of beautiful beautiful (full of beauty)
- action or result of enjoyment enjoyment (the act of enjoying)
