INTRODUCTION

SIWES was established by ITF in 1973 to solve the problem of lack of adequate practical
skills preparatory for employment in industries by Nigerian graduates of tertiary
institutions.

The Scheme exposes students to industry based skills necessary for a smooth
transition from the classroom to the world of work. It affords students of tertiary
institutions the opportunity of being familiarized and exposed to the needed
experience in handling machinery and equipment which are usually not available in
the educational institutions.

Participation in Industrial Training is a well-known educational strategy. Classroom

studies are integrated with learning through hands-on work experiences in a field
related to the student’s academic major and career goals. Successful internships
foster an experiential learning process that not only promotes career preparation but
provides opportunities for learners to develop skills necessary to become leaders in
their chosen professions.

One of the primary goals of the SIWES is to help students integrate leadership
development into the experiential learning process. Students are expected to learn
and develop basic non-profit leadership skills through a mentoring relationship with
innovative non-profit leaders.

By integrating leadership development activities into the Industrial Training

experience, we hope to encourage students to actively engage in non-profit
management as a professional career objective. However, the effectiveness of the
SIWES experience will have varying outcomes based upon the individual student, the
work assignment, and the supervisor/mentor requirements. It is vital that each
internship position description includes specific, written learning objectives to ensure
leadership skill development is incorporated.
Participation in SIWES has become a necessary pre-condition for the award of
Diploma and Degree certificates in specific disciplines in most institutions of higher
learning in the country, in accordance with the education policy of government.

leaders the permission and expectation to work with other staff on conflict resolution
and explain how this works to current front line leaders.
17. SIWES Students will be able to describe different skills leaders can use to Foster
commitment and collaboration with both internal and external
constituents.

The 3 months Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) which

is a requirement for the completion of my course of study, Chemical Engineering, was
undertaken at the Constant Independent Electricity Generation and Distribution plant
Headquarters. The company’s function is to manage the generation and distribution
of electricity, as the name implies. The company occupies the control building at the
main gate, where the electricity generation turbines manage the inflow of gas, outflow
and guidance of electricity around the country’s airspace.

I was an Industrial Attaché (IT) at the CIE Power generation and distribution
company limited.

The Industrial Training was based on working with Electrical servers, metering units,
Power generation turbines, Monitoring and management controls and Operational
Consoles. The installation, repair, preventive maintenance and also generation of
the devices as well as the power generation process were part of my job description.

CHAPTER TWO

CIE POWER COMPANY LIMITED

The Constant Independent Electricity generation and distribution company

limited has its main branch at the Redemption city, KM 46, Lagos Ibadan
expressway, Ogun state, Nigeria with other administrative branches across the
country.

BRIEF HISTORY
On September 1st, 2016, the leadership of the Redeemed Christian Church Of God
[RCCG] inaugurated the RCCG Power generation and distribution plant as an
initiative to as the name suggests generate and distribute power at an affordable
and constant rate to the citizens of the Redemption city and its close neighboring
environs.

The Power plant began work immediately with the use of one simple cycle gas turbine
and over time the power generated was constant 24/7 and affordable to all citizens of
the city. As time progressed the population of the Redemption city grew and with it
the need for a higher capacity and the church bought and installed a second turbine.

The distribution of electricity was smooth and easy flowing and the city was under
constant power, as a result the appeal of the environment continued to grow and the
city continued to increase in population until there was a need for an extra occasional
standby turbine and the church invested in the purchase and installation of the third
turbine. The power generation has been constant and the three turbines with a
combined capacity of 1074 MW supply enough electricity to the entire city and its
environs.

FUNCTIONS OF THE COMPANY

1. Electricity Generation: To efficiently generate electrical power from the combustion
of natural gas or other gaseous fuels.

2. High Efficiency: To achieve high thermal efficiency to maximize the conversion of

fuel energy into electricity.

3. Load Following and Grid Support: To provide load-following capabilities, meaning

they can respond quickly to changes in electricity demand.

CHAPTER THREE

ACTIVITIES AT THE COMPANY

The CIE power generation and distribution plant is divided into three sections and
each section is divided into different departments.
The multiple departments and workers under each section work together for different
purposes but under the same goal; power generation and distribution.

The sections are as follows:

ADMINISTRATION: This department is responsible for the daily task of working on the
running of the plant’s basic needs and wants, They oversee the incoming of new
staff and the running of the personnel of the offices. The departments under this
section are; Administration, Finance, Human Resources

ELECTRICITY GENERATION: This is the heart of the plant and all the operational man-
power of the company is first supplied to this section as a priority first, the
operations and the workings of this section runs the entire power grid and the
different departments here all work together to achieve that goal. The departments
under this section are; Turbine, Operations & Maintenance

ELECTRICITY DISTRIBUTION: Once the power is generated, there is a need to

distribute it appropriately and regulate that distribution to the various part of the
city while accounting for the population density, power needs as well as the
development variations of the different part of the city, this task is done and done
well by this section. The departments that work under it are; Metering, Sales &
Allocation, Store

I spent the duration of my attachment in the electricity generation and the

electricity distribution sections of the company
I was assigned to work at the following departments over varying periods of time;

Turbine
Operations & Maintenance
Metering
Allocation & Sales

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED

I learnt the workings of a simple gas turbine in an electricity generation plant. I also
learnt the entire process of power generation and the part played by the gas turbine.

The process of power generation begins and ends with the following steps and
stages.

1. Air Intake and Filtration: The process begins with the intake of ambient air, which is
filtered to remove dust and other contaminants that could damage the turbine
components.

2. Compressor Section: The filtered air is then directed to the compressor section,
where it is compressed and pressurized. Compressing the air increases its density and
prepares it for combustion.

3. Combustion Section: The high-pressure, high-temperature compressed air is mixed

with a gaseous fuel (typically natural gas) in the combustion chamber. The fuel-air
mixture is ignited, creating a combustion process that generates a high-energy, high-
temperature gas.

4. Turbine Section: The high-temperature, high-pressure gas flows into the turbine
section. This gas imparts kinetic energy to the turbine blades or vanes, causing the
turbine to rotate.

5. Mechanical Energy Conversion: The rotation of the gas turbine's rotor generates
mechanical energy. This mechanical energy is used to turn the generator.

6. Generator: The generator converts the mechanical energy into electrical energy
through electromagnetic induction. The rotating shaft of the gas turbine is
mechanically coupled to the generator, resulting in the production of electricity.

7. Exhaust System: The exhaust gases, which are now at a lower pressure and
temperature, exit the gas turbine through an exhaust duct. Some power plants may
utilize heat recovery systems to capture waste heat from the exhaust gases for
additional power generation, such as in a combined cycle configuration.

8. Control and Monitoring: The entire process is controlled and monitored through a
control room, where operators oversee the operation of the gas turbine, adjust
parameters, and ensure the plant operates safely and efficiently.

9. Electricity Distribution: The electricity generated is then fed into the electrical grid,
where it can be distributed to homes, businesses, and industries for various
applications.

ILLUSTRATION OF GAS TURBINE GENERATION PLANT

A gas turbine for power generation consists of several essential components, each
with specific functions in the overall process of converting the energy of gaseous fuel
into electrical power. Here are the main components of a gas turbine and their uses:

1. Air Inlet: This is the opening through which ambient air is drawn into the gas
turbine.
2. Air Filter: The air filter removes contaminants and particulate matter from the
incoming air, ensuring that it is clean and free of debris. Clean air is crucial to
prevent damage to the turbine components.

3. Compressor: The compressor pressurizes and compresses the incoming air,

increasing its pressure and density. This pressurized air is directed to the combustion
chamber for combustion. Compressors can be of the axial or centrifugal type.
4. Combustion Chamber: In the combustion chamber, the high-pressure, high-
temperature compressed air is mixed with a gaseous fuel, such as natural gas. The
mixture is ignited, resulting in the combustion process, which generates a high-energy
gas with high-pressure and temperature.

2023
5. Gas Turbine: The gas turbine is the core of the power generation process. It consists
of a set of rotating blades or vanes. The high-temperature, high-pressure gas from the
combustion chamber is directed onto these blades, causing the turbine to spin. The
rotation of the gas turbine's rotor generates mechanical energy.

6. Generator: The mechanical energy generated by the gas turbine is used to turn
the generator. The generator converts this mechanical energy into electrical energy
through electromagnetic induction. The electricity produced is then available for
distribution.
7. Exhaust Duct: After passing through the turbine, the high-velocity exhaust gases
exit the gas turbine through an exhaust duct.
8. Lubrication: Gas turbines require a lubrication system to ensure that the rotating
components operate smoothly and with minimal friction.

2023
9. Cooling: Cooling systems are essential to prevent overheating of critical
components, such as the combustion chamber and turbine blades. Coolants and
cooling air are used for this purpose.
10. Control and Monitoring System: The control and monitoring system includes a
control room with computers and control panels. Operators use these systems to
manage and monitor the operation of the gas turbine, adjust parameters, and ensure
that the plant operates safely and efficiently.
11. Fuel System: The fuel system stores and delivers the gaseous fuel, typically natural
gas, to the combustion chamber at the required flow rate and pressure. It ensures a
consistent supply of fuel for combustion.

These components work in tandem to efficiently convert the energy of gaseous fuel
into electricity.

CHAPTER FIVE

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED AT WORK PLACE

The problems I had working at the CIE power generation and distribution
plant has to do with placement and personnel distribution.

Due to the high demand of electricity and other services, there was an
overflow of customer requests and needs and this led to the drafting of
multiple IT students to different sections and departments of the
company.

I had a limited experience at the turbine plant as most of my time was

spent in the metering, allocation and sales departments due to the
shortage of staff in those departments, The little time I was then given to
work in my course related field was what I was able to maximize to gain
the knowledge I have. This I believe will explain the reason for the major
entry into my logbook to be mostly unrelated to the turbine plant or its
supporting departments.

Also the lack of compensation or financial aid from the company was
unencouraging as as a result the ITF portion of my logbook remained
uncomplete and unsubmitted

RECOMMENDATIONS

For subsequent trainees being taken up by the company, I strongly

recommend a more stringent supervision of their training program,
especially by the Human Resources Department. This will go a long way
in ensuring that trainees do not lose focus and will constantly remind
them that their services to the company remain valuable.

Also I suggest ITF should liaise with some companies where they will take
up students for industrial training. This will help students who find it
difficult to find attachments or who end up in companies where they do
nothing.

CHAPTER SEVEN

CONCLUSIONS

This industrial training [SIWES] has afforded me the basic practical and
theoretical knowledge that I may not have gotten from the lecture room.
It also gave me the opportunity to have a feel of what it would be like
after graduation when I start working.

After my internship with CIE Power Generation & Distribution Plant:

• I can effectively handle the demands a turbine plant in a power
generation company
• I can effectively assist in the administration of a company’s digital and
customer server
• I can carry out analysis as well as operational maintenance on
electricity distribution systems

Other benefits include:

Good working ethics: As a result of the close working relationship I had
with the Branch manager, I have been able to imbibe good working
ethics. These ethics includes been able to handle situation with little or no
help, being able to provide solutions to lingering problems, etc.
Career Path: I have been able to use this training to explore various
avenues available at my disposal career-wise. It has given me the
opportunity to have a look into the future and access my readiness for
employment or entrepreneurship.

Finally the internship has bridged the gap between academic theory and
practical and has built a good degree of confidence especially in my
abilities to perform. It has also given me a first-hand experience of the
entire information and communications technology industry

I can confidently say that the experience gotten from this training was a
worthwhile experience.
