My heart flutters rapidly and sweat crawls from my
forehead (personification) to my cheek as I make my way
up the elevator to the sixth floor. Hearing the beep
(onomatopoeia) of the elevator as its doors open makes it
much more realistic. Here I am, at one of the top
multinational firms in the country, for my very first
internship. Before I step out, an attractive red-haired
woman dressed in a dark knee-length skirt and a are am
long-sleeved blue tunic (a long & loose shirt) sweeps her
way past two other people into the elevator. I almost have
to use my foot to keep the door slightly open for me to exit.

the internal atmosphere of the elevator was all
warm, noiseless and peaceful, it is an entirely different
atmosphere once I step inside the office. Continuous,
monotonous ringing of telephones and the sound of
chitter-chatter of the employees make it much livelier and
energetic than I had anticipated (expected). Everywhere I
look, I see people carrying Styrofoam cups in their hands
filled with black coffee. The aroma of the freshly-brewed
coffee is quite tempting (mouth-watering). Chocolate and
butter croissants on everyone’s desk look delicious and
make my mouth water.

I stroll to the reception desk where this young,
charming man is trying to juggle two phone calls
simultaneously (at the same time). Even from a farther
distance, I can smell the scent of his strong, musky
perfume, probably Dior, that lingered (stay/remain) around
the hall. His dark brown hair seems to have been
plastered back with hair gel which gives him a are am
sophisticated (decent/subtle) look. However, I soon snap
out of my daze ( confusion/astonishment) as he starts
discussing details including where I can find my cubicle
and how long I am expected to work.

As I paced to my workstation, I notice a white and

velvety carpet under my feet which is as soft as the fur of
a fluffed up Persian cat. The entire workplace has a
contemporary appearance which is absolutely
are am
eye-catching. The Scandinavian style office puts
practicality and function before all. The decor is minimal,
using basic colours such as white, black and grey to
create a space free of distraction and clutter. Expecting a
small, plastic table and a measly computer to work at, I
am surprised to find a white wooden desk and a black
armchair with a dark grey cushion that sits nearby. This
desk has two drawers and holds a large MAC screen
comfortably. A minimalistic black table lamp and a bare
light bulb pendant add additional lighting around the
workstation. Several floating shelves have been installed
on the wall that carry decor items along with some are am
influential books. An oakwood cabinet with drawers for
papers and journals sits nearby. Finally, a large green
house plant adds a bit of nature to the corner of this office.

I hardly manage to get any work done the entire day as I

am too fascinated and engaged in admiring my office and
discovering how people work. Frequent sounds and are am
vibrations from the photocopy machine beside me shakes
me up for a bit and then the clicking of keys as people type
on the laptop is bothersome (annoying/distracting). I carry
on with my work keeping my eyes glued to the computer
screen. The good-natured people in the comfortable
atmosphere of my office makes me realise that I am really
blessed and lucky!
