LAB REPORT 3
(Lab 3)
(Resistor Combination-Series and Parallel)

ABSTRUCT
My Goal was to learn how to connect the resistors in parallel
and series in a circuit on breadboard. Also find the Req in parallel and
series resistors by DMM and at the end compare it with the
mathematically calculated values.
To find and verify that same amount of current passes through
each element of series circuit and to find if the voltage across the
parallel circuit elements is same.

LAB CONCEPT
In (Series circuit) Current is always same across all the circuit
elements but only the Voltage will be divided across elements of the
circuit. Unlikely in (Parallel Circuit) it is the opposite as voltage remains
same and current gets divided in parallel circuit.

Parallel Circuit
Conclusions(What have I learnt)
I have learnt from this lab that in series circuit (resistors and circuit
elements) should by arranged in series patteren. As a result I proved
that current is same in series circuit but voltage is Divided across the
circuit elements. And for parallel circuit it’s the complete opposite of
series Cuircuit and by above experiment I proved that Current is
distributed in Parallel circuit while Voltage remains same.

Ammeter is connected in Series and voltmeter is connected in

Parallel in the circuit. 12 V for a very small resistors can be a high
voltage which will heat up the resistor and an error in the values is
expected.

POST LAB
(1)Assume that you have a 100 Ω resistor. You want to add a resistor
in series with this 100 Ω resistor in order to limit the current to 0.5
amps when 110 volts is placed across the two resistors in series. How
much resistance should you use?
Answer
R1=100 Ω R2=? V=110V I=0.5Amp
Solution

V=IR => Req=V/I => Req=110/0.5 => Req=220Ω

Req=R1 + R2 => R2=Req – R1

R2=220 – 100

R2=120Ω

(2)Identify the resistance pairs are parallel in the following circuit?

Answer

(a)2and2
(b)3and10

(3)What’s the Req of the following resistance combination?

Answer

Req = 4.8 Ω
