HISTORY OF BADMINTON

 Badminton is a racket sport that is played on a court.


 Played with shuttlecock
 Singles or doubles. The object is to hit the shuttlecock over the net.
 Originated in India.
 Called “POONA” in India during the 18th Century
 First contested as an official Olympic sport at the 1992 Olympic games in
Barcelona, Spain.

RULES OF THE GAME

 It is played by two or four players, either indoors or outdoors


 A net is fixed across the middle of the court.
 Only the serving side can win a point.
 If the serving side fails to return the shuttlecock, it losses the serve, if the receiving
side fails to return the shuttlecock, it loses the point & must receive again.

SCORING

 Points are scored only by the serving side.


 A point is rewarded to the serving side whenever the other side commits a fault.
 If a fault is committed by the serving side, the server does not score a point and
loses the serve.

PREVIEW OF BADMINTON

 Badminton is a game that somewhat resembles tennis and volleyball and involves
the use of a net, lightweight rackets, and a shuttlecock.
 The players hit the shuttlecock back and forth over the net with the rackets.

BADMINTON EQUIPMENTS

 Net – is the central gameplay element in a


game of Badminton, requiring players to
return the shuttlecock from one side of the
court to the other during the match.

 Shuttlecock – (also called a bird or birdie) is a
high-drag projectile used in the sport of
badminton. It has an open conical shape formed
by feathers (or a synthetic alternative)
embedded into a rounded cork (or rubber) base.

 Racket – are light, with top quality rackets


weighing between about 70 and 95 grams (with
guts). Modern rackets are composed of carbon
fiber composite (graphite reinforced plastic),
which may be augmented by a variety of
materials.

BADMINTON SHOTS

 Drop – the shuttle is stroked over the net so it drops very close to the net.
 Smash – a hard hit overhand stroke with a fast-downward path. It is a main
attacking stroke.
 Clear – a stroke which sends the shuttle high over the opponents’ head and drops
near the backcourt boundary line. It may be hit with and overhand or underhand
stroke. Can be used as offensive or defensive play.

 Drive - a powerfully hit forehand or backhand stroke which just clears the top of
the net.

ACTIVITY 1:
Balance the shuttlecock by bouncing it to the badminton racket. Take video of
yourself while doing it. Minimum of 25 bounces and maximum of 50 bounces.
NOTE: Send your video to your PE teacher through messenger.
