Complete Sentences
A complete sentence must have two parts.

subject predicate

Without both parts, it is a fragment


and not a complete sentence.
Subject
The subject tells you who or
what is performing the action.

The subject typically comes


before the verb in a sentence.

subject – He plays
tennis after school.
subject – Jake and Amira play
tennis after school.
Predicate
The predicate tells us something about the subject,
usually what the subject is doing or what is happening
to it.

The predicate must include a verb that explains


what the subject is doing.

What is Subject-Verb-Object?
A simple sentence contains a subject and a verb.
Sometimes, they also contain an object and are often in
this order:

This makes a complete sentence.

beginning - the subject

middle - the verb

end - object
Subject-Verb-Object?
The subject tells us who or what the sentence is about.

The verb tells us what happened.

The object tells us what is affected by the verb.

The kangaroo ate grass


What is a subject?
In a sentence, the subject is the person, animal or thing or doing or being
the verb. This is also usually a noun, pronoun or noun phrase.

What is an object?
In a sentence, the object is having something
done to it.

This is usually a noun, pronoun or noun phrase


telling us what the verb is acting on.

For example:

He kicked the ball.

They baked some cakes.

Katherine opened her bag.


What words can I use for the subject?
Lots of things can be the subject of a sentence.
Here are some fun examples:

The dog Uncle Joe

Lots of things can be the verb in a sentence. Here are some examples:

Lots of things can be the object in a sentence. Here are some examples:

‘has’ and ‘have are the present tense
versions of the verb ‘to have’.

‘To have’ either shows possession or an action in a sentence, e.g.

I have a ginger cat called Biscuit.


George has a bath everyday.

It is important to be careful when choosing the correct form of the verb


for the subject of a sentence.
In the singular present form, the correct
use of ‘has’ and ‘have’ is:

I have I have a pink pencil case.

You have You have a new teacher.

He has He has lots of medals for judo.

She has She has a huge bag of sweets.

It has It has always been easy.


In the plural present form, we always
use ‘have’:

We have We have a small school field.

You have You have a spelling test, Class 6!

They have They have big smiles on their faces.

*Not* They has big smiles on their faces.

Sometimes the different forms of ‘to
have’ can act as auxiliary verbs.

Auxiliary verbs are ‘helping verbs’ that appear with another main verb
in a sentence.

‘fallen’ is the main verb

For example:

‘has’ is used as an auxiliary
