Kanjoor Yearly Report
Mehac started providing clinic services in association with Kanjoor Grama Panchayath and
Primary Health Centre from 2012 onwards. A total of 93 patients have registered with us
since 2012, of which, a number of patients have dropped out. The reasons for the dropout
included difficulty in accessibility to the clinic, death of the patient, shifting patients to
rehabilitation centres and poor treatment adherence. Currently we have 46 patients in active
follow up. The clinics are conducted every 2nd Thursday of the month. At present we are
conducting one homecare every month along with a palliative care team from the health
centre. We also have 2 DHC every months. Currently our home care services are only need
based. However, we also do frequent tele follow ups. Continuing partnerships with LSG
members, different community stakeholders, hospital staff and ASHA workers help us to
facilitate timely intervention for the beneficiaries.
1.CLINICAL SERVICES
As mental health remains a sector where individuals often hesitate to seek assistance, and
where services are frequently scarce, delivering appropriate medical help can be
challenging. Recognizing this need, the clinic was established in collaboration with the
panchayat, with the primary aim of providing free and easily accessible mental health
services to the general public. While initial reluctance stemmed from stigma and lack of
awareness, significant transformation has occurred over time. The increasing number of
individuals availing the clinic's services stands as a testament to this positive shift.
2. TELE FOLLOW UP
Tele follow up is done by our team, where each patient is followed up at least two times in a
month. Through this follow up we enquire with the patient and their family members about
the present condition of the patient. If there is any assistance needed for the patient or
family, the team provides timely services for them.
Many individuals face barriers in accessing healthcare services, often due to physical
limitations, especially prevalent among the elderly population. Additionally, those with mental
illness may encounter challenges, such as social anxiety or depression, which hinder their
ability to seek assistance in unfamiliar environments.
Recognizing these obstacles, the Mehac team has implemented regular home care
initiatives facilitated by palliative nurses, ASHA workers, and doctors . This proactive
approach has proven invaluable, providing essential mental health services directly to
individuals in need within the comfort of their homes. Not only does this benefit the patients
themselves, but it also alleviates the burdens placed on their families.
A caregiver support group offers a vital network of emotional and practical assistance for
individuals caring for loved ones. These groups provide a safe space to share experiences,
exchange advice, and find solace among peers facing similar challenges. By fostering
understanding and solidarity, caregiver support groups empower participants to navigate the
complexities of caregiving with greater resilience and confidence. Mehac team has
conducted regular Caregiver support in the clinics on different relevant topics such as Anger
management, Relaxation techniques, Side effects and usage of medicine, Illness and its
effects on the patient, Stress management, Sleep hygiene, Behavioural modification of
patients and Crisis Management.
Community programs play a vital role in promoting mental health and well-being within
society. These programs offer essential support, education, and resources to individuals
facing mental health challenges. By fostering a sense of belonging and understanding, they
reduce stigma and isolation associated with mental illness. Moreover, community programs
provide accessible avenues for early intervention and treatment, ultimately improving overall
mental health outcomes for individuals and communities alike. Through collaboration and
outreach, they create a supportive environment where individuals can thrive and lead
fulfilling lives despite mental health struggles. Mehac team has donated an Oxygen
concentrator for the palliative patients of Kanjoor, which was handed over to the Medical
Officer. We conducted different awareness sessions for the ASHA workers as they are the
primary point of communication from the community and clients. The sessions were on
Elderly Mental health and Disability Welfare benefits. We also celebrate Christmas and New
Year with the community by distributing Cakes for clients and staff at clinics and while
conducting Home care visits. The Mehac team also donated medicines for people in need.
We also conducted a medical camp in a Daivathan home for people with mental health
issues, and around 80 people were served through the camp.
