About Bodh Gaya

Bodh Gaya's recognition as a World Heritage site is an important milestone
connected to human thought and philosophy. The historical significance of
Bodh Gaya is not only because of a place of enlightenment but also because it
is a historical site intertwined with human culture and civilization. It is also
known from the study of ancient literature that Lord Rama along with his
brother Lakshmana and his wife Sita visited the area for the Pind-Daan of
King 'Dasharatha' and travelled to these regions. From the above
descriptions, it is clear that Bodh Gaya's history was well-established before
the origin of Buddhism.
With the status of a 'World Heritage Site,' the place attracts thousands of
tourists and pilgrims from different Asian and European countries every year.
While Bodh Gaya holds historical significance, scientific research and
exploration based on the findings of the Buddha's enlightenment demonstrate
that many aspects of Indian civilization and culture were preserved and
developed before the advent of Buddhism. Analytical studies reveal that it is
an agricultural site that had become a pilgrimage centre up to the early and
late ancient periods. This site, known by the name 'Uruvela,' was a religious
centre for Buddhist monks.
In today's global society, where values of individualism, morality, spiritual
education, and philosophy are being replaced by economic materialism,
power dominance, energy consumption, personal identity, and consumerism,
it is necessary to revive belief in individual, social, and cultural values. In such
a situation, spiritual education and the teachings of great individuals who
were at the forefront of social movements and worked for social welfare are
highlighted and strengthened at Magadh University.
In present-day Bodh Gaya, where the Mahabodhi Temple is prominent as a
World Heritage site, the region also boasts of rural settlements where
educational and moral traditions of classical literature and cultural languages
are imparted. Colleges and Magadh University have been established, along
with centres for Sanskrit, Pali, Prakrit studies.IIM Bodh Gaya is an addition
to it’s glory in recent years.
