1.1 A fan delivers 4 m3 of air per second at 20 0C and 1.25 bar. Assuming molecular weight of air 28.97, calculate the mass of
air delivered. Also determine the density, specific volume and specific weight of air being delivered. Take R = 8.314 kJ/kg-
mol-K. [5.94 kg, 1.48 kg/m3, 0.673 m3/kg, 14.57 N/m3]
1.2 An increase in pressure of a liquid from 7.5 MPa to 15 MPa results into 0.2% decrease in its volume. Determine the bulk
modulus of elasticity and coefficient of compressibility of the liquid. [3.75x109 N/m2, 0.267x10-9 m2/N]
1.3 Two horizontal flat plates are placed 0.15mm apart and space between them is filled with an oil of viscosity 1 poise. The
upper plate of area 1.5 m2 is required to move with a speed of 0.5 m/s relative to the lower plate. Determine the necessary
force and power required to maintain this speed. [500 N, 0.25 kW]
1.4 Water flows between two parallel plates separated by 2 cm. The velocity of water is given by, u = 2(1-104 y2) where u is
m/s and y in m. The viscosity of water is 1 CP (centi poise). a) Draw the velocity and shear stress profiles and find the
shear force on each plate if the area of each plate is 5 m2. [2N], b) Now if top plate moves such that the velocity profile of
water is, u = 2+102(y/2) – 3x104(y2/2), Find the velocity of top plate, the shear stress profile and shear force on each plate.
[1 m/s, 1.25 N, 1.75 N]
1.5 The bearing of an engine is 10 cm in diameter and 5 cm long. The engine runs at 3000 rpm, the clearance between the
bearing and the journal is 0.5 mm and the viscosity of the lubricating oil is 0.44 N-s/m2. Calculate the power lost in
bearing, neglecting the eccentricity of the shaft, assume linear variation of velocity. [3.41 KW]
1.6 A rectangular block, of base area 500 cm2 and mass 5 Kg, is sliding down a plane inclined at 100 to the horizontal. The
gap between the block and the plane is 1mm thick, and the viscosity of oil filled in between the gap is 0.125 Pa-s.
Estimate the steady state (terminal) velocity of the block. [1.363 m/s]
1.7 A 25 mm dia shaft is pulled through a cylindrical bearing as shown in Fig. 1.7. The lubricant that fills the 0.3 mm gap
between the shaft and bearing is oil having a kinematic viscosity of 8.0x10-4 m2/s and a specific gravity of 0.91. Determine
the force P required to pull the shaft at a velocity of 3 m/s. Assume the velocity distribution in the gap is linear. [286 N ]
1.8 A flat disc rotates on a table as shown in Fig1.8 separated by an oil film of 1.5 mm thickness. If the torque required to
rotate the disc at 50 rpm is 3x10-4 N-m, find the viscosity of oil. [ 8.56x10-3 N-s/m2]
1.9 An oil film of viscosity µ and thickness h<<R lies between stationary solid wall and a circular disc of radius R, the disc is

rotated steadily at angular velocity . Show that the torque required to rotate the disc is 2h .
1.10 When a fluid flows through a sharp bend, low pressure may develop in localized regions of the bend. Estimate the
minimum absolute pressure that can develop without causing cavitation if the fluid is water at 70 0C. [5.81 kPa]
1.11 Assuming that the bulk modulus of elasticity of water is 2.07x106 kN/m2 at standard atmospheric conditions. Determine
the increase of pressure necessary to produce; a) 1% reduction in the volume of the same temperature, and b) 1%
reduction in the volume of air undergoing an isentropic compression. [20,700 kN/m2, 1.42 kN/m2]

partially filled with water of surface tension 0.0075 N/m and zero contact angle. Calculate the difference in the level of the
menisci caused by the capillarity. [0.68 mm]
