Lesson
Develop and Sharpen Public Speaking Skills
17
Communication is an interaction where ideas circulate. Nowadays, effective communication
skills and sharpening public speaking abilities make up the difference between success and failure.
Becoming a successful speaker is no doubt one of the most difficult tasks there is. However, with
good preparations and helpful techniques, you sure can be able to conquer the stage, thus, preparing
you become a great speaker with determination, courage, and self-confidence (Kumar 2005, 7-8).
Speaking in front of a vast audience surely requires a lot of courage and determination -the
very reason it is being feared by a number of people. There are different factors to consider in
mastering the art of public speaking such as:
stage fright/public speaking anxiety
topic of presentation
attitude of the audience
quality of material
knowledge about the topic
body language
length of the speech
voice quality (tone, pitch variation, volume)
When you engage in any public speaking activity, more often than not your main purpose is
to convince the audience to believe in your own beliefs. You would always want your listeners to
accept your thoughts and ideas as facts. With the use of the persuasion model of Aristotle, any public
speech would be a success.
Any public speaking engagements can be broken down into five basic elements, usually
expressed as:
Effect?
Who? What? Whom? Medium?
This is the process that most speaking activities follow either in a daily conversational topic
or a public communication. The speaker must identify initially the message he/she intends to convey
to the targeted audience using a selected channel of communication. Once the message is successfully
decoded, a response from the receiver is sent back to the original sender which is known as feedback.
Thus, creating the flow “Who is saying What to Whom using what Medium with what Effects?”
Ethics is defined as the concept of having morally acceptable values and behaviors. Do we
need to incorporate ethical behavior into our speaking activities? The answer is obviously a ‘yes.’ A
speaker does not need to be intelligent and on point alone. Manifestation of good values is of utmost
significance. Here are some ways to help you integrate ethical behavior in your speaking:
a) Use your own original content – Share your own ideas to the audience by using your original
speech content. If you need to support your arguments by using the words of another, give
appropriate attribution or credit.
b) Provide honest facts – Do not distort any facts or disguise your opinions as fact just to make a
point. Remember, honesty is always the best policy.
c) Use appropriate language and vocabulary – Refrain from using abusive language or resorting to
name calling just to intimidate your audience. Always be respectful and make your case with the
use of compelling facts.

What’s New
Read an excerpt of the speech entitled “I Have a Dream” written and delivered by Martin
Luther King, Jr. Afterward, try to understand the content of the speech and discover the
purpose it was written.
I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for
freedom in the history of our nation.
Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed
the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to
millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous
daybreak to end the long night of their captivity.
Let us not wallow in the valley of despair, I say to you today, my friends.
And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream
deeply rooted in the American dream.
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We
hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."
I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of
former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.
I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice,
sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged
by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
I have a dream today!
I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his
lips dripping with the words of "interposition" and "nullification" -- one day right there in Alabama
little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as
sisters and brothers.
I have a dream today!
I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, and every hill and mountain shall be made
low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight; "and the glory
of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together."
This is our hope, and this is the faith that I go back to the South with.
With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith,
we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of
brotherhood. With this faith, we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to
go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.
And this will be the day -- this will be the day when all of God's children will be able to sing with new
meaning:
My country 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the
Pilgrim's pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring!

year 1963. This speech was mainly dedicated to the continuous hardships that the blacks are still

unending oppression and exploitation of the black Americans he referred to in the speech as Negros.
This speech is one of the many famous speeches that exhibits rich and truthful content,
excellent speech techniques and comprises of ethical considerations among the listeners of the speech.
One of the main purposes of public speaking is the ability of influencing others way of
thinking. When you deliver a speech, your goal is to make your listeners believe your words.
Answer the following questions about the Martin Luther’s speech. Write your answers on

__________________________________________________________________________________

5. Were they effective and helpful in achieving the purpose of the speech?
__________________________________________________________________________________
6. How did he show ethical considerations to his audience of diverse backgrounds? Did he completely
empathize with them?
__________________________________________________________________________________
Martin Luther King, Jr. won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. He was an important political leader
fighting for political rights for black people in the USA. Around 250,000 Americans of all faiths, races,
and creeds joined him and other civil rights leaders in this demonstration of solidarity. By making this
speech, he tried to persuade the blacks to carry on their struggle by non-violent means for the justice and
freedom they longed for. He clearly stated in his speech the strong desires he has for equal opportunities
for the blacks as well as the white Americans.
The speaker’s distinct speech styles and techniques were also quite notable. This can be
observed as follows:
These words are quite familiar to the
audience and can easily relate to although promise, equality, freedom, hope, chain,
they came from different classes and have capital, brotherhood
different backgrounds.
The frequent use of words of complete I am, We have, We must not, We cannot, I
form instead of that of contracted or have, Let us, and There is
shortened form greatly reinforces the effect
and urgency of speech.
He also largely used pronouns such as I, we, our, you to show his audience that he certainly
empathizes with them. He also encourages his audience to come in peace with each other by reiterating
his dreams about the blacks and the whites sitting together in the table of brotherhood. He also displays
his ethical considerations of the audiences as he referred to them as all of God’s children. Despite being
one with the black Americans, he did not show any manifestations of being bias; instead he tried to
persuade one another to transform their nation into a nation of peace and equality.
