The honorable judges, respect the audiences, ladies and gentleman, good morning.

First of all,
I’m …… from … would like to say thank you very much because I have been given a good
chance to deliver a speech entitled “Globalization as Friend and Foe of the Local Culture
Existence”
Well ladies and gentlemen, before I talk more, let me sing some lyrics of a popular Indonesian
pop song from the 1990's. Farfummu dari Paris, Sepatumu dari Itali... Kau bilang demi gengsi,
semua serba luar negeri...". What can we analyze from these lyrics of the song? Foreign cultural
products have been able to change the lifestyle of Indonesian people. That song fragment gives
us a reflection that foreign culture is more interesting. We have to admit that globalization has
basically started to change habits and culture that is rooted in society, starting from changing
lifestyle and even influences the norms and tastes of our society. With the presence of affordable,
easily accessible and free media, it is very easy for us to access all information from all over the
world. Then we sometimes continue to absorb and apply all the information without considering
the possible impacts of globalization. The shifts of cultural values are the serious impact derived
by globalization whom we feel deeply. As a good impact of globalization, society has become
more innovative, more open to other cultures and can enrich local culture. The entry of new
cultures creates amazing cultural collaboration. It can create brilliant, unique and rich art. As we
find in one of Javanese art, Wayang Orang, it combines the Mahabharata story from India with
local Javanese wisdom. It becomes so beautiful. However, is all the impact of globalization good
for our local culture?
Well ladies and gentlemen, of course, everything about the existence of globalization for local
culture is not all good but it's definitely not all bad. Globalization looks like a double-edged
sword that has the power to do real good, but also the power to hurt. Many local cultural values
that have existed for a long time or were inherited by our predecessors have become neglected
and are slowly being lost. In the past, for lunch, dinner, or birthday celebrations, our parents
bought traditional foods such as rendang, corn rice or nasi tumpeng, chicken betutu, or suckling
pig. Today, those foods do not seem very attractive to the younger generation. We prefer to
queue in fast food restaurants which sell famous foreign menus. Some years ago, our
grandparents or our parents sang traditional songs like putri cening ayu ngijeng cening jumah or
Indonesian pop song, hitam putih potomu dalam album kenangan.. I am sure those songs are not
too familiar for us as Gen z. Why do I say so? Globalization leads us to enjoy trending songs
from other countries more, such as K-pop from Korea or western songs from America or Europe.
Perhaps, we have to claim the expression stating “The grass is always greener on the other side”
is right. We consider local culture to be old and foreign culture is cool and modern. What should
we do as this country's generation in this globalization era?
Ladies and gentlemen, let us implement a chinese proverb “When the winds of change blow,
some people build walls and others build windmills” As Indonesian generations, it is important
for us to find the right balance between responding to global trends and preserving local cultural
identity. We have to be wise in sorting out what should just be knowledge and what should be
applied in everyday life. Let us keep the existence of the local cultural heritage of our ancestors
by thinking globally but keeping acting locally.
