A few months back, I went for shopping in Gulshan 1 market along with a friend of mine. We went to a kids store to buy something for my friends niece. In that store, a very young boy, about six years old, was insisting his mother to buy him a Doraemon 7 in one Bedding Set. As his mother refused to do so, eventually he started crying and yelling at his mother, to my utter surprise, in HINDI! I did not have much idea about the very popular cartoon serial Doraemon. As I came to know from my friend about it, it really got me thinking. I could realize how kids lifestyles are affected through a single cartoon character, whether it is their language or their behavior pattern. I could not help thinking about this Doraemon phenomenon among kids and trying to observe and study some young minds around me and asking for opinions to the people that if it is justified or not. Then, later that week, fortunately, I got hold of a paper article titled The Doraemon Phenomenon on how culture and language go hand in hand and how the Bangladeshi people including kids are affected due to the popularity of satellite channels-Indian media, written by Md. Aftab Uddin Chowdhury, Research Assistant, IML, North South University published on The Independent on 16 November 2012. Starting his article with the language-culture dependency, and how a culture can reveal the respective nations past, eventually he talks about how language is influenced by its surrounding environment, how satellite channels are transforming our culture into foreign cultures, especially Indian. After reading this article, I realized that, our cultural identity is severely being threatened by foreign cultures and general people, especially kids are being detached from their culture and standard Bangla day by day.
From my understanding of the topic, I reckon the writer has targeted all the people who are alarmed by this alien invasion in our culture to show support to their concern and those as well who must know why this is necessary to make their kids more interested to keep the hold of their cultural roots. The purpose of the writer is to highlight the recent big transformation of our culture and the impacts on our language and lifestyle, which is due to globalization.
I really liked some particular parts of this article. Where the writer talks about how the foreign cultures including Indian culture are intruding in ours. As he says, Bangladeshi culture has a rich historical background. Our literature, music and art reflect our geographical location, lifestyle and our values. Our culture reminds us our origin and ties in such a firm bonding so that we always maintain a unity among our family. On the contrary, some prefer to practice western culture due to globalization. In urban areas many people try to follow satellites channels only. Especially the young generation has developed a tendency to listen to English and Hindi music; watch English and Hindi drama/serial/movie/cartoon etc. Nowadays, as the writer coins the term as Doraemon Phenomenon, is recently one of the most talked about issues. As the kids are watching the cartoon serial in Hindi, they are more likely to use Hindi accompanied by English, with a little casual Bangla, leaving the practice of standard Bangla. And lastly, this is our high time to be honest and to prevent the alien invasion to our language and culture and protect the original version of the standard Bangla this effort proves him to be a concern Bengali, who is proposing all of us to show our integrity to keep our cultural values and our mother tongue alive.
It is a well written article overall, yet I felt there were some lacks in it. I think the writer could have talked about kids changing behavior patterns due to watching Doraemon. And there is no clear indication what the parents responsibilities are to control their children in such phenomenon. He could have enlightened the fact that, these changes are the manifest of globalization. And it is almost impossible for us in the era of globalization to ban all the foreign satellite channels including Indian, or else, we will lag behind.
In brief, the article was good enough to provide me the answers I had been searching for earlier. It gave me the whole view of the alarming issues that our culture and language are under the threat of losing their own significance and by dint of satellite channels; the children in our country are the most vulnerable ones. I would opine in such alarming issues, that every parent must have strict rules to use standard Bangla in their homes. They, themselves, should resist watching Hindi channels in front of their children. They should interact more with their children about Bengali culture, traditions, and customs. More importantly they should let them know about the glorious history of how we achieved Bangla as our mother tongue in 1952. So, it is the duty of every Bangladeshi citizen to ensure the protection of our glorious mother tongue and its standard, and despite of globalization, take an oath to make our own distinct distinguishable culture around the globe.
