As the beginning, let us say thank to Allah, The Almighty, who has been giving us blessing and guidance,
so that we can gather in this great place. Shalawat and salam, may always be upon to The Holy Prophet
Muhammad Saw., who have brought us from the darkness into lightness.
Then, let me introduce myself. My name's Elma Surya Ningtiyas from the State Vocational High School 1
Plosoklaten. It is a great opportunity for me to stand here in front of you all. In this good occasion, I'm
here going to deliver a speech with the title "English As The Way For Young Generation to Preserving
Indonesian Culture"
Our country, Indonesia, is the largest island nation in this world, with more than seventeen thousand
islands. It also consisted of hundreds tribes scattered from Sabang to Merauke, from Miangas to Rote
island. With many of these ethnic groups, Indonesia has many cultural heritage based on local wisdom
and values that grow and develop in every region of Indonesia. It could be the wealth of our nation.
Our culture is so amazing, so that many foreign tourists from various countries have come to Indonesia
to see it. Our culture is admired by many countries, but there are also some that try to take it away from
the indonesians with a one-sided claim. The incidents of our cultural claim by other countries are
common, starting with Reog Ponorogo, Wayang Kulit, Keris, Batik, and the latest is Kebaya. Our cultural
claims by other countries are due to our own people who have underpreserved this culture and
introduced it into the outside world.
In this modern era, young generations preferring to western cultures that are thought cool and trendy
than Indonesian cultures that are clearly the heritage of our ancestors. For example, the recently
valentine's day celebration. It is one of western cultures, but indonesian youth celebrate it with joy. I
don't judge young people who celebrate valentine's day. But if we like foreign cultures, shouldn't we
also like and love our own culture?
We as the young generation, the millennial generation that is the hope of a future nation must always
preserve our culture. Not just to keep our culture from being claimed by other nations, but also to keep
it from slipping away in time. So, how do we introduce Indonesian culture to the world in English?
As we know, English is an international language spoken by millions of speakers from around the world.
So, if we want to introduce Indonesian culture to the world, then we must do it by using a language that
much people in the world can understand, and it's English. This is very important because our targets
are people from all over the world. So that our culture is recognized as Indonesia's cultural heritage, and
other countries can't claim it as their own anymore.
Young generations like us must be familiar with globalization and the advancement of science and
technology, aren't we? We can take advantage of this to introduce Indonesian cultural heritage to the
world.
Preserving the culture must not by taking part directly, just by witnessing the cultural performances, we
actually helped to preserve the culture. But it would be nice, that we as the young generation must
make good in using things that are already close to us. We could using social media such as TikTok,
Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, or something else to introduce Indonesian culture. We can make vlog
videos that discuss about the culture we are seeing, and the language we speak is English, so that people
of other nations can understand what we are saying. And then, we upload these videos on social media
which users are people from all over the world. Only we, the young generations can do this, because we
are the ones who speak international language and using sosial media the most.
To conclusion, I would like to invite all of you to make good in using English as the international language
and take advantage of the advancement of technology as well as possible. Let's create a change in our
perception of using social media for unprofitable contents became a venue to introduce Indonesian
culture to the world. Let's preserve our cultural heritage together.
My friends, ladies and gentlemen. I think that's all of my speech. I do apologize for any mistakes in
delivering my speech. Thank you for the kind attention.
