Section A
1. Which diagram shows Alloy.

2. Most of the elements on the periodic Table are metals. Metals

can be distinguished from non-metals by differences in their
physical properties.
Which row correctly describes a metal?

3. Copper is sometimes used to make cooking utensils and pans.

Three properties of copper are shown below:
1 Good conductor of electricity.
2 Corrosion resistant.
3 Good conductor of heat.
Which of these properties make it good for making cooking
utensils?
A. 1and 3
B. 1only

C. 2 and 3
D. 2 only
4. Why are alloys harder than the pure metals from which they are
made?
A. There are stronger bonds between the atoms
B. The atoms are all the same size
C. The layers of atoms are distorted
D. The properties of each element have combined
5. What is the name of this hazard warning sign.

Section B
1. About 4000 years ago the Bronze Age started in Britain. Bronze is
an alloy of copper and tin.
i) Suggest a reason why a bronze axe was better than a copper axe.

ii) Brass is another copper alloy. Name the other metal in brass.

iii) Give one use of copper than making alloys.

iv) Alloys of copper are used to make coins. What is meant by alloy?

v) Suggest why an alloy of copper is used to make coins instead of

using copper.

2. a. Which property of metals is most useful when:
i copper is used for electrical wiring
ii. gold is used for jewellery
iii. iron is used to build bridges
iv. stainless steel is used for cooking pans?

b State three differences between metals and non-metals.

3. complete the table by naming two alloys and giving the elements
used to make each alloy.
Alloy Name Elements used to make alloy

4. For each of the metals below, complete the table to identify a use of
the metals and state the most important property of the metal that
makes it suitable for that use.

5. Marcus has dropped a glass bottle of copper sulfate crystals on the
floor and it has broken into small pieces. He has swept the broken
glass and crystals into a container. Explain how he can separate the
mixture of glass and copper sulfate crystals. Remember to include a
list of equipment he needs and to explain how he will stay safe. You
could draw diagrams to help explain.

6. The table gives information about the melting points and boiling
points of some metals and non-metals.

b. Plot the tallied figures on two separate frequency diagrams.

Use the grid below to help you plan your frequency diagrams.
