Diseases of the Respiratory System

Common Colds

The most common respiratory disease is the common cold. This disease spread easily through the air
and is caused by a virus. The common symptoms of a cold are sneezing, runny nose, teary eyes, and
cough.

There is no specific treatment for common cold Drinking fruit juice and getting sufficient rest may help a
person recover from it

Influenza or Flu

Influenza or flu can be similar to the common cold in terms of signs and symptoms, but is more severe. A
person with flu suffers from fever. cough, chills, muscle pain, and fatigue. Its complication, pneumonia,
causes breathing problems that can lead to death.

Pneumonia

Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs caused by a bacteria called Streptococcus pneumoniae. It is


characterized by inflamed lungs. The symptoms can be similar to the symptoms of other respiratory
disorder such as difficulty in breathing with low grade fever. A person with a weak immune system or
weak lungs may be prone to pneumonia.

Bronchitis

Bronchitis is an inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes When a person has bronchitis, the walls
of the bronchi are thickened with mucus that is difficult to expel. In addition, it may be harder than usual
for air to pass in and out of the lungs when you are afflicted with this diseases.

Asthma

Asthma is an allergic reaction to certain substances in the air, such as pollen, animal hair, dust, mold,
and certain kinds of food. Wheezing. the high-pitched squeaking sound that accompanies exhaling,
signals on asthma attack.
Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis, commonly known as TB, is a disease of the lungs caused by a bacterium called
Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Once infected, the patient may suffer from weight loss, loss of appetite,
night sweats, chest pain, and recurring low-grade fever, especially in the afternoons and evenings. There
may also be blood in the sputum of TB patients.

Lung Cancer

A cough that lasts for more than two or three weeks, blood in the sputum, and wheezing when
breathing are the early symptoms of lung cancer. It is later followed by shortness of breath, chest pain,
fever, and night sweats.

Healthy Habits for the Lungs

1. Observe a balanced diet. Eat fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C to increase your resistance to
diseases.

2. Drink plenty of water and fruit juices.

3. Get sufficient sleep and rest.

4. Exercise regularly and take deep breathing exercises to strengthen your lungs.

5. Avoid inhaling vehicle exhausts. Cover your nose when passing by dusty places and garbage dumps. .

6. Refrain from smoking and stay away from smokers. Say "No" when a friends offer you a cigarette.
Discourage your friends from smoking because it is not good for their health.

7. Maintain cleanliness to avoid bacteria or viruses that may infect your respiratory system. Wash your
hands with soap and water often.

8. Cover your nose with tissue when sneezing or coughing. Dispose of used tissues properly.
