ASSERTIVE SENTENCES
• The common reporting verbs used are ‘say’ or ‘tell’ in Present
tense, ‘will say/tell’ in Future tense and ‘said’ or ‘told’ in Past tense.
• When the reporting verb is in Present/Future tense, then the verb
in the reported speech does not change.
Eg. My father says to me, “ I go for a walk everyday.”
My fathers tells me that he goes for a walk everyday.
• When the reporting verb is in Past tense, then the verb in the
reported speech changes from Present to Past and Past to Past
Perfect tense. There will be no change in Past Perfect tense.

• The Simple Present tense stating a General truth does not change
in the reported speech.
Eg. 1. The teacher said,” Asia is the biggest continent.”
The teacher said that Asia is the biggest continent.
Class Assignment (Assertive sentences)
Ex.1 Change the following into indirect speech.
1. Veena will say, “ I can lend her the book.”
2. Maanit said, “Camel is the ship of the desert.”
3. My grandfather said,” Honesty is the best policy.”
4. Golu said to the crocodile,” You are hurting me.”
5. The man said,” I found it this morning in a restaurant.”
6. Aman said to his sister, “Your project is better than mine.”
7. Amit said to his mother,” I will not come home tonight.”
8. I said to her, “I gave you one thousand rupees yesterday.”
9. Mother said, “ It was raining heavily last night.”
10. Anaya says, “ I have been learning guitar for last 4 years.”
IMPERATIVE SENTENCES

• The Reporting Verb ‘say’ is changed into a verb of command, advise or request
such as tell, order, command, ask, urge, beg, advise, warn, request, suggest
etc.
• The infinitive (to +verb) is used in direct commands and requests.
Eg She said to me ,”Please open the window.”
She requested me to open the window.
My father said,” Do not shout.”
My father ordered/warned us not to shout.
• Negative commands are expressed by not + infinitive (to+verb).
• In sentences beginning with “let”, the reporting verb is changed to suggested or
proposed. In place of infinitive, should + verb is used.
Eg. He said,” Let us taste the pizza.”
He suggested that they should taste the pizza.

Ex.2 Change the following into indirect speech.
1. The doctor said to the patient, “ Take your medicines on time.”
2. The teacher said to the students, “ Do your work neatly.”
3. Tanya said to Tarun,” Please return my notes today.”
4. Golu said to the crocodile, “Please tell me what you have for
dinner.”
5. The mynah said to Golu, “Go to the banks of the great, grassy
Limpopo river and find out.”
6. Mother said, “Finish your work before 8 O’clock.
7. The shopkeeper said to the customer, “ Bring your own bag and
avoid using plastic bag.”
8. The commander said to the soldiers, “ Assemble here at 5 a.m.
tomorrow.”
9. Soapy said to the waiter,” Call a cop.”
10. My brother said,” Let us clean the room.”
Ex.3 Change the following into reported speech
1. She said, “I will complete my project today.”
2. Rajesh said to Neelima, “I gave your passport to your mother
yesterday.”
3. The old woman said to the police officer, “I lost my bag.”
4. The officer said to the driver,” Be careful.”
5. The old man said, “Please pick up the paper.”
6. The receptionist said to the visitor, “Please wait here for sometime.”
7. Lily said to John, “Don’t shout at me.”
8. Ranjan says, “ I do not like tea.”
9. Seema said to Meena, ”Elephant is the largest animal on land.”
10. Karan said, “ Let us play together.”
11. Father said to his son,” You must speak the truth.”
12. Mona will say, “ I believe that God helps those who help themselves.”

3. The old woman said to the police officer, “I lost my bag.”
Ans. The old woman told the police officer that she had lost her bag.
4. The officer said to the driver,” Be careful.”
Ans. The officer warned/ordered the driver to be careful.
5. The old man said to his son, “Please pick up the paper.”
Ans. The old man requested his son to pick up the paper.
6. The receptionist said to the visitor, “Please wait here for sometime.”
Ans. The receptionist requested the visitor to wait there for sometime.
7. Lily said to John, “Don’t shout at me.”
Ans. Lily told/scolded John not to shout at her.
8. Ranjan says, “ I do not like tea.”
Ranjan says that he does not like tea.
9. Seema said to Meena, ”Elephant is the largest animal on land.”
Seema told Meena that elephant is the largest animal on land.
10. Karan said, “ Let us play together.”
Karan suggested that they should play together.
