USE:

It is the action which is happening now at the time of speaking and it is a temporary action
e.g. Look ! Those boys are playing in the street .
e.g. What are you doing ? I am studying Maths.
It also talks about continuous change that isn’t finished yet.
e.g. My brother's English is getting better quickly.

Note :

Stative verbs can't be used in continuousity because they describe states, not actions. These verbs have no
movement. They are ( like , love , hate , prefer , want , seem , know , believe , remember , suppose , agree , mean ,
realize , recognize , understand , have ( own ) , think ( have an opinion ) , look ( seem , appear ).

e.g. We say : I agree with you. We don’t say : I am agreeing with you.

e.g. We say : I think you are right .( believe ) We don’t say : I am thinking you are right.

e.g. He looks worried. ( seems, appears ) We don’t say : He is looking worried.

But we say : What are you looking at ? ( look here means visual sight not seem or appear )

PRESENT CONTINUOUS KEY WORDS:

( now – at the moment – Look – Listen – Be quiet – Be careful – Don’t go out – What are you doing ? – today – this
morning – this week – this month – this ….

PRESENT PERFECT VS PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS :

PRESENT PERFECT

e.g. I have already eaten . I'm not hungry now.

e.g. My father has built a new house recently.

USE:

It is the action which finished in the past but still has an effect or a result on the present time. We don’t say when
this action happened in the past .

PRESENT PERFECT KEY WORDS ARE :

( lately – recently – already – just - before – yet – so far – up to now , for , since )

Examples :

1- I have already finished eating my meal.


2- We have painted three rooms from our house so far.
3- My mother hasn’t cooked our lunch yet.
4- Hani has sold his car lately .
5- My little sister hasn’t made any cake before .
6- I have known him for about ten years now.

PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS :

I , We , You , They __________ have been + V1+ing

He , She , It ____________ has been + V1+ing

e.g. I have been studying English for seven years now.

e.g. She has been washing the dishes since 8 o'clock.

USE :

1- It is the action which started in the past and it is still going on in the present time .

2- It is the action that has just finished but there is a tangible evidence related to it showing that the action was going
on for a period of time before it is over now.

PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS KEY WORDS ARE :

( for , since , all )

NOTE : We use present perfect only with stative verbs and non-action verbs.

e.g. I have known you for 10 years now. ( NOT I HAVE BEEN KNOWING YOU FOR 10 YEARS NOW.)

Examples :

1- It has been raining for two hours. I wonder when it will stop.
2- It is 10 o'clock now .They have been driving since 9 o'clock .
3- Ali is out of breath. He has been running.
