Are you ready? Let’s get started. Today we are going to discuss greeting and introduction.

Do you feel good how I began this video?

I’m sure you don’t
Right, every time we begin a social interaction we will need to greet people.
So, I should have begun the video by saying “ hello student or good morning learners”
It is a very basic skill of any communication that you need to acquire.
Commonly there are two kinds of social interaction; formal and informal
Therefore we need to know how to greet people both in formal and informal situation.
Imagine you are in a business meeting. What phrases you use to greet your clients?
Will you say. Sup mate? Or it’s my pleasure to welcome you in our company
Of course you say it’s my pleasure to welcome you in our company. Because you are in a formal situation
Or your gang is visiting your house, then you say “it’s my pleasure to have you in the house”
I’m really sure your friends will say “are you OK?”
Yes, your ability to master greeting skill will determine your success in communication
Ok let’s discuss further about it

Let’s begin our lessons with formal greeting. As you can see here when it is your first time meeting
people you need to greet them. So we We can say hello and then respond it by saying hello too

and then it is continued by saying good morning good afternoon good evening then you respond it the
same way. but for basic Learners of English in Indonesia, they are a bit confused when to say good
morning good afternoon and good evening we say good morning before at 12 for example when it is still
at half past 11 we still say good morning. what about good afternoon we start saying good afternoon at 12
p.m. until just before the sun set and then when the sun has already set we say good evening not good
night. when do we say good night? it is when we are leaving someone after social interactions for
example you are visiting your friends and then you are about to leave them in the evening so you say
good night. We say good evening when it is the beginning of the meeting you say good evening. and then
when you end it you say goodnight.

after we say hello and then good morning, good afternoon or good evening we want to know how the
people are , their well being. so we say how do you do? we respond it by saying how do you do. This
expression is used when it is the first time you meet someone.

another way we can say; how are you? and then we commonly we say I'm fine or alternatively you can
say I'm doing well.
another one we can say how have you been? You can respond it by saying I'm great or I'm okay

And then after asking how people are, then we need to tell the people how we feel when we are meeting
them. and then you say “it's good to see you”. so the answer is “it's good to see you too”,. “pleased to
meet you pleased to meet you too”. okay

And sometimes in certain situations we say is everything under control? We use this phrase in the
situation such as when you are in a business meeting and then the market is going down now and then
you say is everything under control? then you can say or you can respond it by saying yes everything is
fine, okay. right that's the formal one or the formal greeting

now let's talk about informal greeting as you can see here the expressions or the phrases used in informal
greeting when we greet someone in informal setting. You say Hi hello the word hello here is also used
both in formal and informal setting so it can go either formal or informal

and then after that we usually continue asking how the people are; his or her well being. there are a
number of Expressions here that we can say or we can use the first is what's up and then you can answer
it not much. not much here means okay not really good not really bad. okay or not much

Or we can say how is it going and then you can answer it fine. you can answer it good. well actually you
can freely use an expression here according to your situation

And then how are you doing when you watch Hollywood movies you will hear this Expressions quite
frequently. This is one of the most favorite expressions used by native speakers “how are you doing”.
And then your answer should be I'm doing good or I'm doing well

another Expression is what's going on and then you can answer it “nothing just tired”. you know, if you
really feel tired , you just say “nothing just tired”. But when you feel good and people ask you what's
going on, you answer it “nothing I'm okay or I'm good” you can use that answer

and then how is life? you can answer it just got better, I just got better. that means your circumstance
today is better compared to previous days.
and then how is your day? your answer can be good until you get here. you know it's not serious because
this is informal setting so you are talking to your friends that you know them very well. of course this
expression is just joking. good until you get here that means before you get here he or she is good but
when you get here the situation is not good any more. you know when you get along well with your
friends, you frequently make a joke

And how are things? pretty good

And also “alright mate?” you can answer it yeah I’m OK

There are a number of expression that you can use to greet someone depending on the situation formal, or
informal

After learning how to greet someone both in formal and informal setting, now we are going to learn how
to introduce ourselves. There are three settings of introductions: formal, neutral, and informal. Unlike
greeting which only consists of setting; formal and informal. There is one addition in an introduction; it is
natural. Let’s talk about formal first. In formal introductions here when we would like to introduce
ourselves or we would like to introduce our friend, we can use this phrase “let me introduce myself” or”
let me introduce my friend” or we can say “may I introduce myself” or “may I introduce my friend, a
Philips. for example but basically you do not need to wait for agreement from your interlocutor or your
friend here you just continue telling what's your name is or what your friend’s name is. For example my
name is Kevin for example his name is Susie.

and then the second is natural. what does neutral mean? this is a situations in the middle between formal
and informal. so this is Neither the formal nor informal in between. For example in the class or a meeting,
that’s formal but when you are hanging out with your friends and one of your friends get someone and
introduce him to you, that’s informal.

Natural setting is a coincident meeting that, say you are you are are going shopping with your brother or
sister or with your father or your mother and then you meet your mother's friends and then your mother
wants to introduce you to her friends so this situation is called natural. You can use the phrase such as
“this is Danny” or have you met Ben?

For informal introduction you can use the phrase such as “have you guys met? Or do you two know each
other? Or you just simple telling names for example “steven Garry, Garry Steven”
Easy, isnt’t it?
So the conclusion is you can freely use any phrase you prefer but you have to take the situation into
account whether it is formal, informal, or natural. Finally I’d like to say keep on practicing because it will
make you more fluent and perfect. Thank you, very much.
