Psychology 1A

1. What is your motivation in life?

My main motivation in life is to reach as high as I can in the competitive swimming world, and

possibly make it in the Olympics team one day.

2. What is your mission in life, as Celeste Headlee mentions in the video?

My mission in life is to climb as high as I can as a professional athlete, but to also help those

around me, as well as those who are in need mentally as a clinical therapist.

3. Share one goal (that comes from this motivation and mission) that would allow you to

more fully express your potential.

A goal that would allow me to be more expressive of my potential and my dreams is to become

an influential swimmer by reaching to the top so that I can inspire others to keep pushing

towards a brighter future, as well as to encourage them to pursue their ambitions and dreams.

4. In what ways would either actively working towards or achieving this goal allow you

to experience more deeply the qualities of self-actualization, as outlined by Maslow? (Discuss at

least two self-actualization qualities and the overall affirming impact this would have on your

life).

One way I’m currently working towards my mission is by pushing myself to new limits with

swimming. I’m doing this by trying to be more consistent with showing up to practice, not

making up excuses to avoid going to practice, and making sure to give it my all whenever I

swim, no matter where or when I swim.

Another way I’m working towards it is by being more satisfied with where I am now in life,

rather than being constantly dissatisfied with not being enough. I’ve had my moments where I
just obsess over a certain goal or subject and then put myself down or quit halfway through

because I just lose all my motivation, thinking “What’s the point of doing this? I can’t do it. I’m

not going to be the best anyways.” However, I’ve recently been gaining new perspectives, as

well as breaking personal academic achievements that I used to think were impossible, so now I

see more positively and optimistically, knowing that where I am right now is okay because I can

always turn it around. These qualities can have a positive impact on my life because it motivates

me to keep being the best version of myself as I can, while reminding me that where I am is still

a good place to be.

5. How would you feel to be working towards or achieving this goal?

I would be working towards achieving this goal by taking advantage of the time I still have to

keep working towards my goal by getting a headstart and taking college classes while I’m still in

high school.

6. In what ways would it allow you to contribute and give back to others?

Being able to start early would allow me to finish earlier, which allows me to have more time,

which can then be spent doing things like, helping my family financially by getting a job earlier,

working an internship at a psychiatry to help those in need, and getting into the workforce or

competitive swimming industry earlier to gain a deeper understanding and have more experience

being in the real world, where money and connections are important.

7. Which of Maslow’s Obstacles to Growth impede your manifestation of your goal and

why? Please use Maslow's specific "Obstacles to Growth" list in the PP.

The main Obstacles to Growth that impede my manifestation of my goal are negative influences

and fear of greatness because of how I grew up seeing the world. Growing up, I was pretty lazy,
since there was nothing to do, including chores and activities aside from playing video games,

which molded me into

a more introverted and lazy person, and while I was growing up, my family praised me for my

academic ability, with me being able to read at 2 years old, and learning how to count before I

went to preschool. However, the expectations made me nervous, since I also just knew that at

one point, I would fail, and I wouldn’t be able to do anything about it.

8. Share at least one inner conflict, as Anthony Robbins suggests in the video, that keeps

you from materializing your goal and why.

One inner conflict that I have that keeps me from materializing my goal is my lack of motivation

to keep going up and pushing myself towards greatness. It keeps me from pushing towards

greatness because no matter how much I try to convince myself to keep going, deep inside, I feel

like nothing changes, and that anything that I do will change little to nothing in how well I do

something.

9. Which skill of emotional intelligence as stated in Steiner's "Achieving Emotional

Literacy" would you benefit from employing to achieve your goal and why?

I think learning to manage my emotions would help me achieve my goal because it would help

me organize myself mentally and allow me to collect myself and figure out what I want to do in

the moment regardless of the possible outcomes.

10. What are your detailed action steps with specific dates you will have them

accomplished by that will move you closer to manifesting your goal? (Name at least 3

concrete steps that are directly tied to your goal that you can do today).

A detailed action step into a smaller goal would be hitting a certain time in swimming by the

next time a certain annual swim meet comes around. More specifically, I’m talking about
dropping 2 seconds in the 50 yard freestyle by next May, which I think is a big goal to reach, but

with enough effort, I might be able to make it. To start working towards this, I think the best

thing to do is to not make any excuses, start spending more time at home to properly recover

after swim practice, and to give it 100% whenever I swim.
