STEP-BY-STEP PROJECTS B2

Invent a language
Work in pairs. Answer the questions. Then read the Introduction to check your answers.
1 Which famous books and films are the languages Goldogrin and Newspeak from?
2 What kind of language do you think Globish is?
3 In what situation(s) do non-native speakers of English from different countries often need to use English to
communicate with each other?
Introduction
There are many examples of invented languages in the worlds of
cinema and books. The writer JRR Tolkien loved creating grammar
rules and changing words from Latin and Welsh. Goldogrin, known as
Gnomish (or ‘other language’), was one of the languages he invented
for The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Newspeak was the fictional
‘controlled’ language invented by George Orwell for his novel Nineteen
Eighty-Four. More recent invented languages include Globish. The
name is a combination of the words global and English. It’s a simplified
form of English created by Frenchman Jean-Paul Nerrière for non-native
speakers of English from different countries to be able to communicate
more easily with each other in business situations.
Work in groups. Follow the steps to invent your own language. Take turns to make notes.

Step 3
Prepare a lesson plan
■ You’re going to teach a class of beginner students
how to speak your invented language. Make a list
of things to include in your lesson. It may help to
think about what happens in your English classes –
introduce yourself, explain how to greet someone, do
a role-play exercise ...
■ Decide who’s going to be responsible for each part
of the lesson. Include everyone in the group.
■ Make a lesson plan and prepare any materials you
need – visual aids, flashcards, exercises ...
■ Practise giving your lesson. Think of phrases your
teachers use.
It’s the first lesson so the teacher
needs to introduce him or herself.

The teacher should speak

in English and Backlang.
Step 5
