• Learn about friction force and look at examples.

Reviewing forces
We talked about two types of forces, push and pull.

Push and pull are forces that change the way an object moves. It might
make them go faster, go slower or stop them.
You can also use push and pull to change the shape of an object or the
direction the object is moving in.

In general:
Push moves things further away
Pull brings them closer.

Kicking a soccer ball will move it Pulling a cart moves it closer

away from you and change it’s towards you, is this push or pull?
place, is this push or pull?
Push and pull forces can be used to change the shape of
materials

Using pulling force, Using pushing

we can change the force, we can turn
shape of rubber and clay in to clay pots
stretch it! and bowls!
Now lets talk about
friction!
Friction
Friction occurs between two surfaces that slide against each other.

Friction is the force that acts

against you when you try to
move something heavy.

The rougher the surface,

the stronger the friction.

Friction produces heat, like when you rub your hands together.
Using and Reducing
Friction
Friction is useful when it helps
us grip the floor with our shoes
and stop car tyres skidding.

However, for people like ice

skaters, it is a good thing that
ice causes very little friction.

Which do you think is easier to slide on, a smooth surface or a rough

surface? And why? Lets try and answer that!
Which surface do you think is easier to slip on, the snow (A) or grass (B)?

Of course (A)! Because there is less friction force!

Any surface that is slippery or smooth means it has small friction force!
Any surface that is rough means it has a lot of friction force!
Why do you think a slide
is made from plastic?!

Because plastic is smooth,

which means it doesn’t
have a lot of friction so it
will be easy to slide on!

What if the slide was

made from rough wood?

Then you wouldn’t slide on

it because there would be a
lot of friction to stop you!
Air Resistance
Air resistance is a type of friction.

Air resistance makes it more

difficult for an aeroplane to travel
through the air.

Because there is friction in the air, airplanes are made in a way that
makes the friction less and fly easier!
Remember!

• Friction is a force that happens when two objects rub

against each other!

• On smoother surfaces friction is less, which means

its easier to move on them!

• On rough surfaces friction is more, which means its

harder to move on them!
