I. OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, the learners are expected to:

1. determine the elements of Rhetorical Questions;


2. analyze the question if it is Rhetorical Questions or not;
3. identify the rhetorical question used in a sentence.
A. Content Standards The learner demonstrates understanding of how world literatures and
other text types serve as vehicles of expressing and resolving conflicts
among individuals or groups; also, how to use strategies in critical
reading, listening, and viewing, and affirmation and negation markers to
deliver impromptu and extemporaneous speeches.

 Introduction
Ask, question, interrogate, query, inquire means to address a
person in order to gain information. ask implies no more than the
putting of a question. question usually suggests the asking of a series
of questions. questioned them about every detail of the trip. Whenever
we hear questions in comes to our mind that we need to answer it
immediately, but some questions need or requires an answer or
specific information but some questions do not need answer because
it obviously or already knows the answer or the answer to the
questions already implies to the given question.

Sarcastic Rhetorical Questions: Sarcastic questions are rhetorical


questions that are asked in a way that implies the opposite of their
literal meaning. It also express irony and sarcasm in the questions.
Example: “what time do you call this?”
“Are you kidding me?”

Humorous Rhetorical Questions: Humorous rhetorical questions


(silly questions) are a type of question asked not to receive an answer,
but to make a joke or a funny point.
Example: “why do cats have nine lives?”
“Is it hot I here or It is just you?”

Reflective Rhetorical Questions: these are questions that asked with
the intention of encouraging deeper reflection and thinking rather than
necessarily receiving a response. These inquiries usually offer their
own solutions or are meant to prompt the audience to think on a
specific viewpoint or realization.

Use of Reflective Rhetorical Questions in Public Speaking- engage


the audience and pause to allow them to think of an answer. This gets
the audience to actively participate rather than passively listen as they
create hypotheses or resolutions.

Example: “Who are we to hinder the rights of people of different


genders?”

TAG QUESTIONS: Tag questions are a grammatical structure used to


turn a statement into a question, usually to seek confirmation or
agreement. They consist of two parts: the main statement and the tag
itself.
