CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Attendance management is an important component of academic

institutions as it helps to monitor student attendance and engagement,

providing valuable insights into their academic performance. Traditional

methods of attendance management, such as manual sign-in sheets and

paper-based records, can be time-consuming and error-prone. To address

these challenges, institutions have turned to technology-based solutions such

as QR code scanning devices to optimize attendance management.

Tardiness is a significant issue in academic institutions, and previous

studies have shown that it can negatively impact academic performance and

student engagement (Doolittle & Ali, 2013; Walker, 2010). Students who are

chronically tardy are at risk of missing important information and instructional

time, which can have a detrimental effect on their academic progress. QR

code scanning devices have been identified as a potential solution to address

this issue, as they provide a quick and efficient way to track student

attendance and reduce the time required for manual recording (Mukherjee et

al., 2019).

Globally, the use of QR code scanning devices for attendance

management is gaining popularity in educational institutions. This technology

has been implemented in several countries worldwide, including the United

States, Australia, and the United Arab Emirates. In the United States, QR
code scanning devices have been used to track attendance and monitor

student arrivals and departures (Zimmerman, 2019). Similarly, in Australia,

QR code scanning devices have been used to manage attendance and

monitor student participation, leading to reduced absenteeism and improved

student engagement (Robertson et al., 2016). In the United Arab Emirates,

QR code scanning devices have been used to manage attendance and

monitor student behavior, leading to improved attendance rates and reduced

tardiness (Almaazmi, 2018).

The use of QR code scanning devices for attendance management has

several potential benefits in educational institutions. It can enhance the

accuracy and efficiency of attendance tracking, reduce tardiness, and improve

student engagement. Additionally, it provides schools with real-time data on

student attendance and behavior, allowing for timely intervention and support

where necessary. So, the use of QR code scanning devices for attendance

management is a growing trend globally. Evidence suggests that it can be

effective in reducing tardiness, improving attendance rates, and enhancing

student engagement. As such, it is likely to continue to increase in popularity

in educational institutions worldwide.

In the Philippines, attendance management is crucial in the education

sector, particularly in ensuring that students attend their classes on time and

regularly. Tardiness and absences have been identified as major factors

affecting student performance and academic success. The Department of

Education (DepEd) has implemented various policies and guidelines to

address attendance management, including the use of attendance sheets and

monitoring systems.
In recent years, technology has been utilized to optimize attendance

management in schools. One such technology is the use of QR code

scanning devices. QR codes are two-dimensional barcodes that can be

scanned using a mobile device to access information or data. In the context of

attendance management, QR codes can be used to scan student IDs or

attendance sheets, which can then be automatically recorded and tracked.

There have been studies conducted in the Philippines on the efficacy of QR

code scanning devices in reducing tardiness and improving attendance

among students. For example, a study by Lim and Rapacon (2018)

investigated the effectiveness of a QR code-based attendance monitoring

system in a university setting. The study found that the system significantly

reduced tardiness and improved attendance among students.

Another study by Suminguit et al. (2019) focused on the

implementation of a QR code-based attendance monitoring system in a public

high school in the Philippines. The study found that the system was effective

in improving attendance and reducing tardiness among students. The use of

QR code scanning devices in attendance management has shown promise in

improving student attendance and reducing tardiness in the Philippines.

However, further studies are needed to evaluate its long-term effectiveness

and impact on student performance.

Locally in Davao, one potential issue that could benefit from optimizing

attendance management using QR code scanning devices is the problem of

tardiness among high school students. Tardiness can negatively impact

academic performance and disrupt classroom activities.

According to a study by the Department of Education (2019), tardiness

is a common problem among students in Davao. The study found that

tardiness rates in Davao schools ranged from 10% to 25% of the student

population, with the highest rates reported among high school students. By

implementing a QR code-based attendance monitoring system, schools in

Davao can potentially reduce tardiness rates by providing a more efficient and

reliable way of tracking student attendance. This can also allow teachers to

identify students who are frequently tardy and implement interventions such

as counseling or early warning systems. Moreover, QR code scanning

devices can help schools in Davao comply with Department of Education

regulations on attendance management. The department requires schools to

maintain accurate attendance records and submit regular reports on student

attendance rates (Department of Education, 2018). In Inawayan National High

School, there is a prevalent issue of students arriving late to their classes. The

consistent late arrival of students hinders their learning progress and creates

a need for effective measures to address this issue. By using QR code

scanning devices, schools can ensure accurate and timely recording of

attendance data, which can help simplify the attendance reporting process

and enable teachers and administrators to monitor attendance trends over

time.

The study on the efficacy of QR code scanning devices for reducing

tardiness in Grade 12 academic track students in Inawayan National High

School provides valuable insights into the potential benefits of optimizing

attendance management using technology-based solutions. The study's

results have practical implications for academic institutions seeking to

optimize attendance management and improve student outcomes through

technology-based solutions such as QR code scanning device. By reducing

tardiness rates and improving attendance management, institutions can

promote a culture of punctuality and accountability among students, leading to

better educational outcomes and student engagement. The study's findings

can serve as a guide for other schools in the Philippines and other countries

in implementing effective attendance management solutions and also can

have practical implications for academic institutions seeking to optimize

attendance management and improve student outcomes.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of a study about a QR code scanning device may vary

based on the specific context and research questions being addressed.

However, some potential objectives of such a study could include:

 To assess the feasibility and usability of QR code scanning devices for

attendance management among Grade 12 Academic Track students.

 To evaluate the effectiveness of QR code scanning devices in reducing

tardiness among Grade 12 Academic Track students.

 To identify the factors that contribute to the success or failure of the

implementation of QR code scanning devices for attendance

management in the Academic Track program.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to determine whether the use of QR code scanning

device can optimize attendance management and improve punctuality among

grade 12 students in the Academic Track program.

Specifically, the student seeks to answer the following quantifiable

questions:

1. What is the level of openness among students towards adopting new

attendance management technology, such as a QR code scanning

device, at Inawayan National High School?

2. To what extent do students find the QR code attendance management

system to be convenient and easy to use at Inawayan National High

School?

3. What is the average efficacy of QR code scanning devices in reducing

tardiness among Grade 12 Academic Track Students?

4. Is there a significant relationship between the use of QR code scanning

device for attendance management and the reduction of tardiness

among Grade 12 academic Track students?

HYPOTHESES

Alternative Hypothesis
There is a significant relationship between the use of QR code

scanning device for attendance management and the reduction of tardiness

among Grade 12 academic Track students.

Null Hypothesis

There is no significant relationship between the use of QR code

scanning device for attendance management and the reduction of tardiness

among Grade 12 academic Track students.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Tardiness in learning environments has long been a problem, affecting

students' academic performance and general academic engagement. The

purpose of this study is to look into the effectiveness of QR code scanning

devices in reducing tardiness among grade 12 students in academic contexts.

In this Theoretical framework we will investigate the underlying theories and

concepts that support the usage of QR code scanning devices in minimizing

tardiness in academic settings.

Operant Conditioning Theory

Operant Conditioning Theory was proposed by B.F. Skinner (1953)

states that behaviors is shaped by the consequences that follow it. Positive

consequences, such as incentives, increase the likelihood of the conduct

occurring again, whereas negative consequences, such as penalties,

decrease the likelihood of the behavior occurring again. In the context of this
study, the usage of QR code scanning devices as a positive consequence can

incentivize students to arrive on time and reduce tardiness.

Self-Determination Theory:

Self-determination theory was proposed by Edward Deci and Richard

Ryan (1985) posits that individuals are intrinsically motivated to engage in

activities that meet their basic psychological requirements for autonomy,

competence, and relatedness, according to this theory. The usage of QR

code scanning devices in the context of this study can improve student

autonomy by providing them control over their attendance and punctuality.

Furthermore, it can boost relatedness by establishing a sense of community in

the classroom and improve students' competency by providing feedback on

their attendance and timeliness.

Technology Acceptance Model

The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) was proposed by Fred

Davis (1989) indicates that a technology's perceived usefulness and

simplicity of use are important drivers of its acceptance and utilization. The

perceived utility of QR code scanning devices for reducing tardiness can

influence students' willingness to utilize them in the context of this study.

Furthermore, the simplicity of use of QR code scanning devices can influence

students' opinions of its utility, as well as their eventual adoption and use of

the technology.

Social Learning Theory

Social learning theory was proposed by Albert Bandura (1977) states

that behavior is learned through observation and modeling, as well as

reinforcement and punishment. In the context of this study, students may

learn by watching their peers' use of QR code scanning devices and the

positive outcomes, reinforcing their behavior to use it and, as a result,

reducing tardiness.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Use of or Code-Based Attendance Management System

According to the case study conducted by Sharma and Kamal and

published in the International Journal of Computer Science and Mobile

Computing, a QR code-based attendance management system for students

can be an effective and efficient solution for educational institutions. The study

involved the development and implementation of the system, as well as a

survey of students and faculty to assess their perceptions of the system. The

results showed that the QR code-based system was reliable and accurate,

with a high level of data security and privacy. Both students and faculty found

the system to be user-friendly and convenient, with real-time monitoring and

reporting capabilities (Sharma & Kamal, 2015).

This study concludes that QR code-based attendance management

systems can be an effective and efficient solution for educational institutions,

providing a streamlined and automated approach to attendance tracking.

Likewise, Cavicchioli, Puci, and Valentim (2018) conducted a study on the use

of QR codes for attendance tracking in higher education. The authors found

that QR codes can be an effective tool for tracking attendance, as they are
convenient and easy to use for both students and instructors. The authors

also noted that the use of QR codes for attendance tracking can have a

positive impact on student engagement and academic performance.

The study highlights the potential benefits of using QR codes for

attendance tracking in higher education. The authors' findings suggest that

the use of QR codes can enhance attendance tracking, which can positively

impact student engagement and academic performance. Also, QR codes can

be easily integrated into existing systems and do not require any specialized

equipment or training, making them a convenient tool for both students and

instructors. By using QR codes for attendance tracking, educators can save

time and effort in manual attendance taking, and students can be encouraged

to attend classes more regularly, as attendance tracking becomes more

convenient and accessible. The study underscores the importance of

exploring and utilizing technology in the classroom to improve educational

outcomes and streamline classroom management.

Moreover, a study conducted by Choudhary and Sharma (2021) also

supports the use of QR code-based attendance management systems in

higher education. The authors developed and implemented a QR code-based

attendance management system and surveyed students to assess their

perceptions of the system. The results showed that the majority of students

found the system to be reliable, user-friendly, and efficient, with a positive

impact on attendance and academic performance. The authors concluded

that the use of QR code-based attendance management systems can

enhance attendance tracking and improve student engagement and academic

performance in higher education.

Furthermore, in a study by Chen, Liu, and Du (2021), they developed

and implemented a QR code-based attendance system for a college-level

course in China. The study found that the QR code system was accurate and

reliable, and that it improved the efficiency of attendance taking. Additionally,

the system provided real-time monitoring and feedback, which helped improve

student engagement and attendance. The study concluded that the use of QR

codes for attendance tracking is a feasible and effective approach for higher

education institutions.

Overall, the studies suggest that QR code-based attendance

management systems can be effective, efficient, and convenient solutions for

educational institutions, providing a streamlined and automated approach to

attendance tracking that can positively impact student engagement and

academic performance. The use of technology in the classroom, such as QR

codes, can help educators save time and effort in manual attendance taking

and streamline classroom management.

Efficacy of using Qr Code-Based Attendance Systems in Reducing

Tardiness Rates

The study by Suroso and Nurtanto (2020) found that using a QR code-

based attendance system significantly reduced student lateness from 8.16%

to 4.22% in a vocational high school setting. The system also reduced the

workload for teachers managing attendance. This study suggests that QR

code-based attendance systems can be an effective tool for reducing lateness

in educational settings, providing valuable insights for the proposed study on

the efficacy of QR code scanning devices for reducing tardiness in Grade 12

academic track students.

Moreover, in the study by Nurbayani, Nurhadi, and Ermawati (2019)

investigated the effectiveness of using QR codes to reduce lateness in a

university setting. The study involved 40 participants who used the QR code

system for a period of four months. The results of the study showed that the

use of QR codes significantly reduced the lateness rate of students from an

average of 15.6 minutes to 6.2 minutes. The study also found that the use of

QR codes improved the accuracy of attendance recording and helped in

reducing the workload for lecturers.

The findings of this study suggest that QR codes can be an effective

tool for reducing lateness in university settings. This study provides insights

for the proposed study on the efficacy of QR code scanning devices for

reducing tardiness in Grade 12 academic track students in Inawayan National

High School. The results of this study can help in assessing the potential

impact of QR code-based attendance systems in the proposed study.

In addition, Hamid and Azlan's (2019) study found that the use of QR

code attendance significantly reduced lateness rate of students from 15.2

minutes to 6.8 minutes in a polytechnic setting. The study also found that the

QR code attendance system improved the accuracy of attendance records

and reduced the workload for lecturers. The study suggests that QR code

attendance can be an effective tool for reducing lateness in educational

settings.
Based on the reviewed studies, QR code-based attendance systems

have been found to be effective in reducing lateness in educational settings.

These systems have shown a significant decrease in tardiness rates,

increased accuracy of attendance records, and reduced workload for

teachers. These findings suggest that the use of QR code scanning devices

for attendance management in Grade 12 academic track students at

Inawayan National High School may result in improved academic outcomes

by reducing tardiness rates and improving attendance records.

Attendance Systems on Reducing Tardiness

Staub and Balkin's (2016) study explored the effects of an automated

attendance system on student tardiness in two middle schools. The study

found that the implementation of the system significantly reduced tardiness

rates. Jarvis and Jarvis (2014) conducted a study on the effectiveness of an

electronic attendance monitoring system in improving student punctuality and

attendance. The study concluded that the system was effective in reducing

tardiness and improving attendance. Similarly, Sugimoto and Claycomb

(2015) examined the effects of an electronic attendance monitoring system on

student attendance and achievement. The study found that the system was

effective in improving attendance and had a positive impact on academic

achievement. Finally, Mohamud and Ali (2019) investigated the effectiveness

of a biometric attendance system in reducing tardiness in a secondary school

in Kenya. The study found that the system was effective in reducing tardiness

and improving attendance. In summary, these studies suggest that the use of
attendance monitoring systems, whether automated or biometric, can have a

positive impact on reducing tardiness and improving attendance in schools.

CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH DESIGN

In this study, the researchers will utilize a descriptive/correlational

research method. The correlational research method is suitable for studying

the relationship between two variables. The study is designed to determine

the efficacy of a QR code scanning device in reducing tardiness among Grade

12 Academic track students of Inawayan National High School and to

determine whether there is a relationship between the two variables.

RESEARCH SAMPLING

For this quantitative study, the researchers will use purposive sampling

to select respondents from the population of Grade 12 Academic track

students at Inawayan National High School. The sample will consist of all 124

students in the academic track. The purposive sampling method will be used

to select respondents who meet the inclusion criteria, which include being a

Grade 12 Academic track student and attending Inawayan National High

School. The use of purposive sampling will enable the researchers to select

respondents who are representative of the target population and have

experienced the use of the QR code scanning device in reducing tardiness.

This approach is suitable for the research design as it allows the researchers

to focus on a specific group of students who are most likely to be affected by

the intervention. Moreover, the use of the entire population of academic track

students ensures that the sample size is adequate to generate statistically

significant findings.

RESEARCH LOCALE

This study will be conducted in Inawayan National High School, which

is located in Inawayan, Sta. Cruz, Davao Del Sur. The researchers have

chosen the grade 12 students who belong to the Academic Track as their

respondents because they are the most relevant and suitable respondents for

this study. These students have regular classes and are expected to attend

school on a daily basis, which makes them more likely to experience issues

related to tardiness and attendance. By focusing on this specific group of

students, the researchers hope to gain a better understanding of the efficacy

of QR code scanning devices as an attendance management tool in a real-

world school setting.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The research instrument that will be used in this study is a survey

questionnaire developed by the researchers. The questionnaire was designed

to gather information on the efficacy of QR code scanning devices for

reducing tardiness among Grade 12 academic track students at Inawayan

National High School. The survey questionnaire consists of three parts:

before, during, and after the intervention with the QR code scanning device. It

is structured using a Likert-type scale, with five response options ranging from

"strongly agree" to "strongly disagree." This scale allows the respondents to

indicate their degree of agreement or disagreement with the statements

presented in the survey. The Likert scale was chosen as it provides a clear

and easy-to-understand response format, allowing for quick and efficient data

analysis.

The survey questionnaire was reviewed and validated by the

researchers' teacher to ensure that the questions were clear, concise, and

relevant to the research objectives. The validation process involved assessing

the appropriateness of the survey questions, the clarity of the response

options, and the overall structure of the questionnaire. The feedback received

from the teacher was used to refine and improve the survey questionnaire.

Thus, it is used in this study to gather reliable and valid data on the efficacy of

QR code scanning devices in reducing student tardiness.

DATA GATHERING

To gather the necessary data, we will employ survey questionnaires as

our primary research instrument. The survey will be designed to collect

information on the students' demographics, frequency and reasons for being

tardy, and their opinions on the QR code scanning device. We will distribute

the questionnaires to a representative sample of grade 12 academic track

students and collect their responses anonymously. The collected data will be
analyzed using statistical tools to determine the effectiveness of the QR code

scanning device in reducing tardiness among students. Through this

research, we hope to provide insights that can inform schools' decisions on

implementing technologies that promote punctuality among students.

DATA ANALYSIS

Based on the survey questionnaire data, a Pearson correlation

coefficient (r) and analysis of variance (ANOVA) for the regression model will

be used to investigate the relationship between the use of QR code scanning

device and student tardiness. The data will be analyzed using statistical tool,

with a significance level of 0.05. Additionally, descriptive statistics will be

calculated to provide an overview of the data. These will include measures of

central tendency, such as the mean, as well as measures of variability, like

standard deviation.

The results of the analysis will be presented in tables to aid in the

interpretation and understanding of the data. The findings will be discussed in

relation to the research question, and any implications for future research or

practical applications will be considered.

which represents the unexplained variability in the data, is 15.948. The total

sum of squares, which represents the total variability in the data, is 18.967.

The degrees of freedom for the regression and residual are 1 and 111,

respectively, while the total degrees of freedom is 112. The mean square for

the regression is 3.019, which is obtained by dividing the sum of squares by

the degrees of freedom. The mean square for the residual is 0.144.
The F-value, which is the ratio of the mean squares for the regression

and residual, is 21.013. This value is used to assess the significance of the

regression model. The significance level (p-value) associated with the F-value

is 0.000, denoted as "^b" in the table. This indicates that the F-value is

statistically significant, implying that the regression model provides a better fit

to the data compared to a model with no predictors.

In summary, the ANOVA results in Table 6 indicate that the regression

model is statistically significant. The significant F-value suggests that the

predictors in the model have a significant impact on the outcome variable.

This suggests that the regression model provides a good fit to the data and

can be considered as a useful tool for predicting or explaining the variability in

the data.

RECOMMENDATIONS

For future researchers, it is highly recommended to adopt QR code

scanning devices for Grade 12 classrooms to optimize attendance

management, based on the positive response and agreement from

respondents. These devices have proven effective in reducing tardiness and

improving attendance accuracy. To ensure successful implementation,

providing comprehensive training and ongoing technical support is crucial.

Teachers and students should be trained on effectively using the devices and

integrating them into daily classroom routines. Regular monitoring and

evaluation of the system should be conducted, collecting feedback, tracking

attendance data, and analyzing trends for continuous improvement.

Promoting awareness and engagement among students, parents, and the

wider school community is important. Clear communication should be

established to inform stakeholders about the benefits of the QR code

attendance management system and encourage active participation.

Moreover, exploring QR code scanning devices with offline functionality

would ensure uninterrupted operation in areas with limited connectivity.

Additionally, integrating a feature to automatically notify parents via email or

message upon student QR code scans would enhance parental involvement

and keep them informed about their child's attendance. By following these
recommendations, Inawayan National High School can optimize attendance

management, leading to improved attendance, reduced tardiness, enhanced

accountability, and a more efficient learning environment for Grade 12

Academic Track students.
