DMAIC PROCESS
• Origins:
• Developed by Motorola in 1986 and later
popularized by companies like General Electric.
• Evolved from quality management principles from
Total Quality Management (TQM), pioneered by W.
Edwards Deming.
• Previous Work:
• The DMAIC methodology builds on the Shewhart
Cycle (Plan-Do-Check-Act) for continuous
improvement.
• Various industries have adopted it to reduce
variations and improve process reliability.
Objectives of the
DMAIC Process
Primary Aim:
• To systematically improve processes by eliminating defects
and reducing variability.
Specific Objectives:
• Identify and define the problem accurately.
• Quantify the current performance and root causes of
inefficiency.
• Identify root causes of defects, inefficiencies, or issues.
• Implement sustainable improvements.
• Establish control mechanism to enhanced performance.

Clearly state problem or process to be improved. Assemble a cross-functional team with the
necessary expertise.
Identify customer needs and expectations. Develop a project charter outlining goals, scope,
timeline, and team roles.
Measure
Measure the current state of the process to Use appropriate tools like check sheets or

Operational Benefits:
• Enhanced process efficiency by reducing variation and
waste.
• Higher – quality products/services with fewer defects.
• Improved customer satisfaction through consistent
quality delivery.
Business Impact:
• Reduction in costs associated with defects, rework,
and inefficiencies.
• Greater employee engagement through structured
problem-solving techniques.
• Competitive advantage through operational
excellence.
Future Trends:
• Manufacturing: Streamlining production processes,
improving product quality.
• Healthcare: Reducing medical errors, improving patient
