Admission Circular
Full-Time MPhil/PhD Program (Session 2024-2025)
Applications are invited for admission in full time MPhil and PhD program starting from
01.06.2024 in the following Departments and Institutes.
1. Faculties, Departments and Institutes:
(a) Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences: (Department of Computer Science
and Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Environmental Sciences, Statistics and Data
Science, Chemistry, Geological Sciences);
(b) Faculty of Social Sciences: (Department of Economics, Anthropology, Geography &
Environment, Government & Politics, Public Administration, Urban & Regional
Planning);
(c) Faculty of Biological Sciences: (Department of Botany, Zoology, Pharmacy,
Biotechnology & Genetic Engineering, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology,
Microbiology, Public Health and Informatics);
(e) Faculty of Business Studies: (Department of Accounting & Information Systems,
Marketing, Management Studies);
(f) Institute of Business Administration (IBA-JU), Institute of Information Technology
(IIT), Institute of Remote Sensing & GIS.
(g) Faculty of Arts and Humanities: (Department of International Relations, English,
History, Philosophy, Drama & Dramatics, Archaeology, Bangla, Fine arts);
(h) Bangabandhu Institute of Comparative Literature and Culture (BICLC).

A. Eligibility Criteria for Admission to MPhil Program Other Than


Department of Geological Sciences and Departments/Institute Mentioned in
(g) & (h) of 1.
(i) Candidates must have first Division or GPA 4 in either of the SSC or HSC or equivalent
examination and at least second division (50% marks) or GPA 3.5 (out of 5) in the other
and
(ii) At least 55% marks or CGPA/GPA 3.5 (out of 4) in both Bachelor (Honors) and
Master’s degree; and,
(iii) Candidates with required qualifications mentioned in clauses A(i) above and having
MBBS (five years program) or equivalent degree from any medical college [recognized
by the UGC and Ministry of Education, Bangladesh] may be allowed to take admission
into the MPhil program in the Department of Pharmacy and Department of Public
Health and Informatics.
B. Eligibility Criteria for Admission to MPhil Program for the Departments and
Institute Mentioned in (g) & (h) of 1.
(i) A Second Division (50% marks) or GPA 3.50 (out of 5) in both SSC and HSC or
equivalent examinations, and at least 50% marks in the aggregate or CGPA/GPA 3.00 in
both Bachelor’s (Honors) and Master’s degree.
(ii) For admission to the MPhil program under the Department of Drama and Dramatics,
applicants are required to have at least one published article related to Drama and
Dramatics in a reviewed journal, and two (2) years of working experience at the
International Theatre Institute (ITI) or any theatre group approved by Bangladesh Group
Theatre Federation (in terms of acting, directing, writing screenplays, set designing,
etc.), including second division/class (50% marks) or CGPA/GPA 3.25 in all examinations
from SSC to Master’s level.
N.B. One year study leave is compulsory for MPhil degree which shall commence at the
beginning of the course work.
C. Eligibility Criteria for Admission to PhD Program Other Than Departments
and Institute Mentioned in (g) & (h) of 1.
(i) A candidate holding an MPhil degree from any recognized university of Bangladesh or
a Master’s degree from any reputed foreign university shall be eligible to apply for
admission in PhD program.
(ii) A candidate (a) having first division or GPA 4 either in the SSC or HSC examination and
second division (50% marks) or GPA 3.5 in the other examination, and (b) having first
class or GPA 3.50 in both of the Bachelor’s (four years program) and Master’s program
in the respective/allied subject shall be eligible for admission into the PhD program.
(iii) A candidate holding a three years Bachelor’s degree, must have, in all degree program
ranging from SSC to Master’s, at least three first division/class and a second
division/class in another with a minimum of 55% marks.
(iv) A candidate with the required qualifications mentioned in clauses (i) and (ii)(a) of (C)
above and having MBBS (five years program with 70% marks) or equivalent degree
from any medical college [recognized by the UGC and Ministry of Education,
Bangladesh] may be allowed to take admission into the PhD program in the Department
of Pharmacy and Department of Public Health and Informatics.
D. Eligibility Criteria for Admission to PhD Program for the Departments and
Institute Mentioned in (g) &(h) of 1.
(i) A person holding an MPhil degree from any recognized university of Bangladesh or a
Master’s from a reputed foreign university shall be eligible to apply for admission into
the PhD program offered by Jahangirnagar University.
(ii) A candidate having first division or GPA 4 either in the SSC or HSC or equivalent
examination and second division (50% marks) or GPA 3.5 in the other examination; and
first class or CGPA/GPA 3.25 in either of the four years Bachelor’s or Master’s program
in respective/allied subject and second class (50% marks) or CGPA/GPA 3.00 in the other
- shall be eligible for admission into the PhD program.
(iii) A candidate holding a three years Bachelor’s degree must have, in either of the SSC or
HSC, a first division and a second division with a minimum of 50% marks in another;
and, in either of the Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program, a first class and a second
class in another with a minimum of 50% marks for admission into the PhD program.
(iv) For admission into the PhD program in the Department of Drama and Dramatics
candidates are required to have at least two articles (related to Drama and Dramatics)
published in a peer-reviewed journal and three years of working experience at the
International Theatre Institute (ITI) or any theatre group approved by Bangladesh
Group Theatre Federation (in terms of acting, directing, writing screenplays, set
designing, etc.), including a second division/class (50% marks) or CGPA/GPA 3.25 in all
examinations from SSC to Master’s level.
N.B. Two (2) years study leave is compulsory for PhD degree which shall commence at the
beginning of the course work.

2. Application and Admission Procedure


Eligible candidates can apply by filling out the appropriate admission forms available at the
university's website postgrad.ju-admission.org. Candidates from foreign countries can
apply for any program following the same process. The grade equivalency of examinations of
foreign candidates will be assessed according to the guidelines of University Grants
Commission of Bangladesh. Decisions made by the university authority regarding the
application of foreign candidates will be final.

(a) Guideline for Submitting Primary Application


(i) Candidates will register/sign up themselves at admission website postgrad.ju-
admission.org and then log in by creating their own username and password and submit
their primary applications with uploading all necessary documents and payment by logging
into the website. The candidate will obtain a printout payment receipt. This username and
password will be kept by the candidate and will be required during the final admission
process if selected.
(ii) The university authority will examine the applications and publish the final list of selected for
admission. Selected applicants will be notified via notice in the website and SMS mentioned
mobile number in the application.
(b) Required Documents for Upload Along With Application
(i) Attested marksheets and certificates of all examinations.
(ii) Research proposal/synopsis signed by the candidate and supervisor.
(iii) The candidates are currently in service must obtain a ‘No Objection Certificate (NOC)’ from
their employer stating that they will be granted the necessary study leave in due time to join
the full-time MPhil or PhD program.
(iv) The Candidates who obtained their last degree from any university other than Jahangirnagar
University must upload an attested copy of migration certificate.
(v) Passport size photograph (300*300 pixel), digital signature of the candidate (300*80 pixel).
(vi) Recommendation letter from two renowned referees.
N.B. Incomplete and inaccurate applications will be rejected. Each candidate can apply to only
one program. Candidates who are already enrolled in any program will not be eligible to
apply for any equivalent or higher-level degree programs.
(c) Primary Application Fee

• For MPhil Program BDT. 1,000/- (For Foreign candidates USD 20) and
• For PhD Program BDT. 1,500/- (For Foreign candidates USD 25).
Candidates are required to pay (1.1% service charge applicable) through the online payment
gateway and obtain the payment receipt which will be attached along with the admission form.

(e) Admission Guideline


(i) Candidates have to log in to the university admission website postgrad.ju-admission.org
using the Username and Password created during the primary application process.
(ii) Candidates may re-upload the related documents uploaded during primary application if any
amendments are deemed necessary.
(iii) The research proposal or synopsis must be signed by both the supervisor and the applicant.
(iv) Candidates finally selected for admission have to pay BDT. 29,600/- (For Foreign candidates
USD 400) for PhD and BDT 22,100/- (For Foreign candidates USD 300) for the MPhil
program through the online payment gateway (1.1% service charge applicable). The money
receipt must be retained by the candidate. Teachers and officers of Jahangirnagar University
will not be required to make any payment for admission fee.
(v) The university authority will examine the applications and notify the selected and valid
candidates via SMS to print out the admission form. Then the printed application form must
be submitted to the respective Department/Institute in due time to complete the admission
procedure.

(f) Guideline for Submission Hard Copy of Admission Form


Candidate must attach the following documents with the hard copy of admission form for
submitting to the concern department/ institute:
(i) Attested Marksheets and Certificates of all examinations.
(ii) Research proposal or synopsis (two sets) signed by candidate and supervisor in A4 size paper.
(iii) The candidates currently in service must attach ‘No Objection Certificate (NOC)’ from
employer stating that he will be granted necessary study leave in due time to join the full-
time MPhil or PhD program.
(iv) Candidates who obtained their last degree from any university other than Jahangirnagar
University must submit an attested photocopy of migration certificate.
(v) Money receipts of primary application and final admission.

N.B. Original marksheets and certificates must be presented during submission of hard copy for
inspection by university authorities.
